A statue stands in front of the wash stand. It looks to be an old man with long hair and a beard, wearing robes covered with magical symbols. He seems to be trimming his beard with a pair of scissors.
So, the statue is moving?

This is very unusual...

Any discernable magical symbols? Would I recognize or have an idea who he is since I am from this region and he appears to be a mage of note?

Somehow, someone has changed most of the residents of the castle to statues it would appear, and therefore was more easilly able to take it over. If only we could find a way to reverse these transformations.

They're "generic" magic symbols, if any could be called that... most you recognize as common symbols any apprentice learns.

You do recognize him as the Palace Magic-User by the name of Mirabilis.

** I keep forgetting about the standard checks

No one finds anything of interest in the room, nor any traps or hear anything behind the west door, but just as you group in the center of the room, the west door opens and a hooded figure comes in.

Neither is surprised.

It gets the initiative but just stands there, as if waiting.

The figure lowers its hood and...

You find yourself face to face with what seems to be a human female but with snakes for hair! Patrick, Cugel, and Bertrem freeze and turn to stone! Si'Nat, Rondo, and Kurik manage to avert their gaze in time.

Using deductive reasoning, Cugel has determined that perhaps the statues found throughout this castle have not been statues at all, but people petrified by...

Rondo attempts to grab the mirror by the washstand and reflect the medusa's gaze back at it with it while avoiding looking at the monster. If something happens to the mirror, or if it doesn't work he'll pull out his axe and close his eyes, fighting blind if necessary.

Success! Rondo pulls off the mirror and holds it in front of him, facing the creature. It recoils and tries to turn away but it's too late - it freezes and turns to stone (extra XP for thinking of that!)

"Good deed Rondo..."

Cautiously entering the room, you carefully scan the floor until you're satisfied that there aren't any hooded figures (or otherwise) in the room. Raising your eyes, you see it's a 30' square room with you coming in the center east wall. Other doors are in the center south wall, center west wall, and west portion of the north wall.

A plain bed and a huge wooden desk dominate this sparsely furnished bedchamber. A broom lies in one corner near a pile of dirt. A tattered pair of silk bedroom slippers lie on the floor near the bed. A small nightstand has been overturned. While you watch, a small black kitten races out from under the bed, bats one of the slippers around, then runs back under the bed.

(I can't take a chance with anything that belonged to the medusa... crouches and takes careful aim and puts the kitten out of it's misery with an arrow...)

(whispering to himself...)

"Bye-bye kitty, kitty..."

"WAIT!!!!! Don't kill the cat, stupid elf! It could be the mage's familiar...Ask it for some stone-to-flesh potions instead!"

He goes and examines the medusa, her belongings (carefully), and the stoned mage's as well, searching for traps, treasure, and most importantly, any cure for his stoned comrades, and the other people in the palace too.
