The "Let's Design a Set Together" Game

Everyone likes designing their own Magic cards, right? And everyone likes the "let's build a deck together" games, right? So why don't we mash them together and try to design a set together?

Why don't we try to design a regular large expansion set (110 commons, 88 uncommons, 88 rares) while roughly balancing the colors and coming up with some themes and mechanics? Then as the set fills up, we can start assigning rarities, balancing cards, and cutting some if necessary.

I'll start out with a really generic card:

Explosive Goblin
1R
R: Sacrifice Explosive Goblin to have it deal damage equal to its power to target creature or player.

Let's have a nice, big, beefy creature. Big in size. Big in Casting Cost. Big in special ability.

Gigantical Mugroth
5RR
Creature - Mugroth
Trample
Whenever Gigantical Mugroth deals damage to an opponent, destroy target land.

Heh, this HAS been tried before and always seemed to run out of steam. Check past threads in Homemade Cards.... :)

This I'm not good at, thinking up cards. So I'll bow out of this one.

No, I'm much too lazy to do that. Oh well, maybe this one will make it all the way to 286 cards. I mean, we've got four already. We should be able to wrap it up nicely in about 75-80 more days.

Anyway, I like Limited's card, so I'm going to try turning it into a cycle.

Capricious Giant
1RR

Hmm.. how about making it a cycle with a small twist?

Let's add a spell. Something to make opponents think twice before attacking.

Awaken the Dead
1B
Instant
Return target creature from any graveyard to play under your control. Remove this creature from the game at end of turn.

EDIT: added "under your control", as I had intended to.

Capricious Fire Maiden
1R
Creature - Giant
When Capricious Fire Maiden comes into play, put two cards from your hand on top of your library
2/1

0: Put a creature you control on top of owners library. Capricious Fire Maiden deals 1 damage to target creature or player

T: Put land you control on top of owners library. Destroy target land that is also a creature.

Oversoul

The Tentacled One
Since so many of our cards are capricious, I think I'll throw in a little something to confuse people...

Dark Caprice
3BB
Instant
Put your hand on the bottom of your library and move any number of cards in your graveyard to your hand. You take 1 damage for each card put into your hand in this way.

Destroy target enchantment unless its controller pays 1, if he does put a 2/2 bear creature token into play under your control.

I don't see this card being problematic but it may be, what do y'all think?

I don't think it's problematic, but I might suggest having it destroy an artifact instead of an enchantment. I think nowadays, white typically gets all the cards that destroy only enchantments. Even with this change, the card still wouldn't be as powerful as oxidize.

Overall though, I like it. It can throw off less-skilled players who might make the wrong decision.

If we are going to design this set, why don't we come up with a theme for the set (new creature types, characters, plot, etc). I've already introduced the Mugroth monster.

Counter target creature or artifact spell if controller pays 2, else creature or artifact comes into play under your control. you control all coming into play effects

This needs to worded better, but.....

Gain control of target creature or artifact spell unless that spell's controller pays 2. If he/she does, counter that spell.

There's my suggestion.

Much better. Thanks

I am going to create a cycle of creatures in each color that sacrifice themselves at at certain event to bring out a more powerful monster from the deck/graveyard. While I'm developing these, can someone else create a name for these type of creatures? They are similar to flip cards, but they won't end up legendary.

Servant, Majordomo, Handmaiden, Bringan (means bringer in german), Guide, Escort, Mentor, Trainer.

Just some random thoughts.

BTW - that sounds a little like YU Gi Oh's special summon and Fusion mechanics.

It kinda does sound like Yu-gi-oh (and like Pokemon's evolution thing), but I like the concept of accomplishing some goal to getting something better. I mean, Magic already has something similar to that in "Spirit of the Night", "Scion of Darkness", and even "The Unspeakable", among others. This concept that you can summon a powerful beast by having a certain combination of cards adds, in my opinion, a very CASUAL aspect of the game as you have another goal while playing BESIDES winning.

EDIT: While thinking of the themes for these monsters, we need a plot reason for them to sacrifice to get stronger.

I've decided to add my first addition to one of my cycles. Here's what the red one looks like now.

Volatile Mugroth
2R
Creature – Mugroth
Sacrifice: Destroy target land
Whenever a land goes to the graveyard from play, you may sacrifice Volatile Mugroth and search your library and hand for a Charging Mugroth card and put it into play
2/1

Charging Mugroth
3RR
Creature - Mugroth
When Charging Mugroth comes into play, destroy target land
During your upkeep, if your opponent has 5 or more lands in his or her graveyard, you may sacrifice Charging Mugroth and search your library and hand for a Gigantical Mugroth and put it into play
4/3

Gigantical Mugroth
5RR
Creature - Mugroth
Trample
Whenever Gigantical Mugroth deals damage to an opponent, destroy target land.
