Read the MTG.com article that I posted at the beginning of the thread. It explains everything in greater detail. Basically, you play as long as you want, add cards whenever it's desirable, and create virtual collections, but from a relatively small pool.

So, let's say we start with Beta: Check
Each player opens a box of boosters? Yep
Build decks and play? Yep
Trade cards with other players? Yep
Ban cards that are agreed to be a problem? Yep, with the caveat that you may exchange banned cards for like rarity cards - or keep them if you think we might "un-ban" a card later.
Then what? Add more cards to our collection? New sets like the Dark? Yep.
How long does it last? Forever...

Is Beta acceptable?

I think by majority vote (with a quorum of 50% or more players voting), a card is deemed broken and will be banned. Any owners of that card may exchange it for a single card of similar rarity. You could also keep the card if you felt it may be unbanned later...

If you get an "Ante" card, you may keep it and play it when your opponent agrees to use Ante for a game... Alternatively - I think you should be able to exchange it for a like rarity card? Or should you get a random like rarity card (same for banned)?

It seems like we're close to finalizing the guidelines... can we begin on Monday? 8/6?

OK, I just generated a box for myself. Saved it, then generated a couple more just to look at them...

One card I saw which won't really work in this format is "Chaos Orb". I nominate that as the first "banned" card... :)

But, what shall we do? One random rare (generate a single pack and exchange the orb for it) would seem better than allowing a person to choose a rare (as I'd originally postulated).

I got a decent box, no power 9... sadly I have to figure out what to use my 4 laces for... :( Using Apprentice I got a fairly decent distribution with 36 boosters... better than I'd expected (only 4 duplicated rares).

Also, will there be a 4 card limit? or can someone make a 40 Plague Rat deck (with trading obviously)... :)

Since this is constructed, the 4 of any one card limit should be used.

Random generation of the replacement rare seems fair.

I'll have to try this tonight or over the weekend.....hmmmmm

While their article did not include a 4-card limit, the 2 decks listed appear to adhere to it, so that seems acceptable.

I will post a "tradebook" and a list of wanted cards Monday.

I used Apprentice also to Generate mine, got one P9 card, and will have to say that without some heavy trading, not sure that my stock will hold up against anyone here....

I think just eliminating Chaos Orb as a posibility and replacing it with a random rare makes sense. Later, however, if we have to ban cards after people have traded for a deck, I'm not sure that a random replacement for something that was traded heavily to get is going to be so appropriate.

What about Ante cards?

I have 3 and will likely not play for Ante. Would anyone object to getting three replacements? Or would someone want to trade for their ante deck?

I think I have a decent set of cards, but I have a lot of useless rares...

EDIT -

OK, so I just finished my second deck... was looking at cards and realized I have no Circles of Protection... Checked Apprentice and it doesn't think CoP is in Beta.... So, I think there's a bug... Should I recreate my cards with Suitcase since I have skewed commons? I checked the other rarities and they add up (36 rares, 108 unc, 396 com)... Strange. Did anyone else get the same thing? (I am using a possibly older Apprentice...)

Even newer info -

I got the latest version of Apprentice and it corrected that issue for CoP.
I also got the latest version of Magic Suitcase, and after some fiddling with it, I figured it out enough to generate a box. Trouble I found was it attempts to insert production errors - to the tune of almost 200 basic lands, sometimes in place of a rare, but often in place of a few commons... Do we want this level of "reality" or not?

So, I hate to have wasted effort with my earlier box, but I guess I'll generate a new box based on either the fixed Apprentice or the land-rich Magic Suicase?

I'll be using Apprentice myself. One quirky thing, in my test boxes, I've consistently found that Counterspell is as rare if not rarer than Moxen

What are you looking for Train?

(How did you end up with Plains/Swamps? with Apprentice I only got a few Mountains in place of commons - with Magic Suitcase I was so hosed I switched to Apprentice)

I could use a Dark Ritual (only got 3 in my box).

Counterspell used to be Uncommon - and with all the uncommons in the set, it isn't unusual to get so few. (I got 2).

If Suitcase gives a lot of basic lands, but Apprentice doesn't, isn't it better to use Apprentice?
Seems like using Suitcase puts you at a disadvantage.
I used suitcase and got lots of basic lands.

That's why I used Apprentice. Now, you could import your cards from Apprentice into a Suitcase Inventory.

I just didn't find Suitcase to be all that user friendly... way too much info...

Apprentice has it right - According to legend, there were mountains in the commons on occaision - because they needed to fill a slot in the common sheet or something like that.

I can generate anyone a box, If you PM me your email. Also, I have it in Excel format (with links and other info - like all the cards in the set for reference) or I can just send Apprentice output files.

If I do one for you, you'll get the first box without a Chaos Orb in it - I just found it easier to redo a box with Generate than to save it, and make a random booster for a replacement.
