Why do we even need avatars?

I've seen what Avatars can do to a group...they take up more space than the posts and people emphasize more about what their posts look like than what the posts have to say...

I'm currently trying to size down a custom avatar for a few members to use on other message boards... any idea's other than sizing the picture down?

Don't use the whole picture?

Analysis of the picture shows that Photoshop adds irrelevant data to the picture file itself. We will extrapolate the data, and give it to someone else.
