DUke: Well, no, when you use words that someone doesn't understand (or the whole conversation), that person can deem the conversation (or you) "mysterious" or "cryptic". But like you said, it has different connotations to different people. However, I think it depends what "tenure" or status the professor has in the college. Some might be working somewhere else, the science ones may be working on experiments and/or papers, humanities professors might be doing something else. That's usually why they have specific office hours; 'cause they're doing something. And of course, some might work full-time at the college and just teach classes so they have loads of free time.
