I think Cyberlore, the creators of Majesty, just wanted different weapons for each "tree" of heros. Warriors and Paladins pretty much come from the same tree (although I guess WoD's do too, but they use a Chaos Blade).

Keep in mind that all you're doing is the popular vote; you (the people) don't actually elect the president. You do get to elect your congresspeople, and since the House Representatives come up every 2 years, you can get in on that pretty easily :)
