I guess Welder is probably the best utility creature, with Masticore coming in second (Rector doesn't count, because it is best used as a combo component and not a utility creature). A favorite of mine has long been Abyssal Gatekeeper.

Yeah, Vindicate's worth something. Not sure how much exactly... Black's lack of artifact/enchantment removal has long been its bane in several formats. Disenchant is a very coveted card by black mages. Vindicate's printing helps a little, but it requires a white splash...
