With the Second Singleton Ultimate Draft winding down...

I think I will have to sit this out, for three reasons (only one of them is that I can't hang with the big boys on this). The other two are that I'm trying to finish my PhD in the next few months, and that I'm expecting my first child in a few weeks, which might reduce my free time... :)

Well Rokapoke... If I can hang with them, you can... Congratualtions on the PhD wrapping up, and Congratulations again w/ the firstborn!

I've got 3 (all boys)... Kids are a lot of work, time, and money... but they are worth it.

EDIT - Ransac, you can officially move me to interested. I'll do it so you cats can stay at 8... if for some reason you get 9, I'll drop.

How about a booster box draft? Open an entire booster box of product X, then everyone drafts (like Singleton) from that boxes contents? Alternatively we could do it like the sports league - everyone picks 3 packs which get thrown into the pot, we crack them all open and that is our "cube"... For 8 card packs we'd do 2 packs of them, but for Alliances we'd just do 1. There would be 40 rounds instead of 45.

OR... we could open 1 pack of EVERY (non-core past Beta) expansion and use those as the cube... I count 50 expansions in my booster generator - which only includes Portal 3 Kings as a "starter" expansion we could take or leave...

That might get us to the 8 players... there are at least 8 active forum players...

That sounds a lot like the Sports League (which I lost interest in rather quickly).

Well, unlike the sports league, you'd draft from the entire pool of cards rather than pack by pack...

I lost interest w/ the Singleton Draft when I could see where things were going, but I stuck it out anyways... The trouble w/ the wide open power drafts is that average players like me, get bored fast with getting beat by those in the know... I prefer limited where it's more about deckbuilding than knowledge of every obscure weird combo. I lost to Melkor's combo, not to his deck - and I was able to eke out 1 win from him.

Modus & you both simply outpowered me before I could get going.

I only suggest this because there are other players here who might be more interested in a more limited format (like Mooseman & DarthFerret for example).

I'd suggest either using the Legacy banned list or what I'd like is to do is cut out some sets. Perhaps drafting only from Mirage on or we'd all pick a group of sets that would constitute the card pool. I think it would hurt the fun of the draft if we limited the card universe too much and I like the Singleton format.

Perfectly understandable. I probably won't be interested in a format like that. I usually love limited drafts and sealed format, but not so much in a thread format. I'm not sure what it is about the Singleton Draft that I find it so much more fun, though.

And the issue with only using sets from Mirage and onward are some playing don't have much experience playing with more recent sets.

I'm just trying to get to 8 players... because no matter what the format, investing hours and days in drafting a deck is no fun when you don't get to actually use it - AND you can't win with it...

As far as Mirage onward... I'm in the group Ransac identified, I simply don't know the newer sets enough to make a good deck/draft. the last time I played with "actual" sets in any sort of format where I'd know the cards is about Invasion Block - and that's only from MtGO beta testing w/ a lot of drafts etc for fun. After that, I have picked up a pack here and there, and I've played some Mindmaster... but I couldn't tell what the power cards from anything past that are. That was evident by my draft choices - and the commentary where I learned about better cards...

I don't think the inclusion of the restricted cards really made any single deck a winner.

What about capping each player to 5 rares? Or to at most 1 card per expansion (reprints excluded - you'd need to identify which expansion you picked from).

I realize these are entirely different formats from Singleton... but I think it would limit the power decks and keep it more casual & fun.

And to clarify on my lack of knowledge w/ newer sets... it'd be much easier to be able to pin down gatherer to look for a pick than open ended searches...

So, here's a potential compromise singleton method (which would only be useful if it meant we'd convince the uninterested to try and reach 8 players). And really you could do this with more than 8... Only Beta is included as a core expansion.

Each player has the opportunity to take 5 passes in the draft. If they pass, they move their priority to #1 in the subsequent round and can return to the expansion at the end of the draft (in order).

Round 1 - Beta. Players draft 1-8 a single card from the Beta Expansion.
Round 2 - Arabian Nights - players draft from 8 to 1 a single card from AN.
Round 3 - Legends . . .

Round nn - Conflux
Round nn +1 Passed expansions as needed.

........ what about something that can build to EACH of our strengths?

Let's toss the drafting/booster pack/sealed deck idea out of the Window. What about "Build your own Standard." You can pick any two consecutive blocks (plus the core set that went with it) and build a then-standard legal deck out of the block.

However..... Affinity or Academy might just unfairly dominate that. What about a "Build your own BLOCK?" Rather than each of us choosing a standard environment, why not pick three sets (1 standalone and 2 expansions), each from different cycles. Players can pick sets that other players are using, so you don't have to compete with other players over the same cards. Additionally, this will allow each of us to build to our strengths and build a type of deck that we're comfortable with.

eh?..... EH????? Anyone?

I think that would be interesting...

Again, my only reasoning here is to get to 8+ players... if we can't succeed at that I like "easy" formats where I'm not going to spend forever building a deck.

I truly love MindMaster - I know it's very random and also highly dependent on going first... but it's way more fun to me than singleton was. (although I do enjoy the game we're playing right now - probably due to Oona :) )

I think it would work best if we all had the same "Standard".

Ransac

CPA Trash Man
What if each of us contributed one set suggestion to the "standard?" Limit 2 standalone sets and 1 core set. We can roll dice to determine the order of who picks sets.

I like it... since it isn't "drafting", we might get 8 players, and if we don't... it won't take 3 months just to get 45 cards!

I'm all for it. I'd also like to do a third Singleton, but I could get interested in this format.

We'd discussed this much earlier (BYOS) as a format...

I'll start a thread and see what interest we have.

And - on a side note... I can't figure out why some of our posters who visit don't get involved in any Forum Games... I guess it's the time commitment.
