The 'trick' is a quirk of the way the Equipment rules are worded.
I personally realized you could equip, do the first portion of the trick, and then 'milk' two additional damage out of it.
The interraction of stabbing one of your creatures with it is funny... though doesn't change the card very much. It's worth it in limited, but difficult to use.
