States, ...what's the point?

Why has WotC and the DCI set it up so States mean nothing? Shouldn't the state champ go on to Nationals? Otherwise, what's the point?

We should start a petition to the DCI to make it so.

Well, states may not mean cash, or advancing to anything else, but saying to someone, I came in second in the Prerelease sure doesn't say as much as, I came in second at the state championships!

The states tournament has a point because it keeps all those nasty Pro Players on their home turf. I got beat at a PTQ by Pro Players coming from elsewhere because "I'm not good enough to Qualify on the basis of my performance at home, so I'll just go to every Qualifier till I eventually win a slot."

Poor players like me can barely afford to go to any tournaments. Nobody wants those Pros' around, cleaning up the Championships. And so, there is no reward for a Pro to attend, because a Pro wouldn't play to get a Title or Pride, because titles and pride do not pay the bills. Pros play for cash.

If a person would be able to attend only one PTQ, then every PT would have about 90% of the same people... That would be pretty boring! Right now, it's "If you have enough time and money to put into the game, you will eventually qualify." And everyone has a small chance of just coming into a random PTQ and winning it.

arhar: Why do you say 90% of the people would be the same if the suggestion is implemented? Does the same person win the PTQs he/she enters, no matter what?

I would think there would be a different makeup each time, because since only 1 or 2 people can win a slot, that knocks out about 100+ (whatever the number is) immediately out of the running. You would REALLY have to playtest and make sure your deck is ready for this one-shot deal.

Of course, that would probably mean cheating and "unethical" play would be on the rise... but that shouldn't too much of a problem if there are already clear guidelines and rules in place.

I meant there are some people that are q'ed for the Tour on the rating, and are constantly present on every PT: Price, Finkel, OMS brothers, Alex Shvartsman, Gary Wise, Igor Frayman .... And if WOTC would follow your suggestion, the number of these would increase

arhar: I still don't get what you're saying. They're q'ed on the rating? Do you mean their ranking? If so, how is that related to q'ing by PTQs?

And I don't know about the others, but apparently Price is notorious (or at least was last year) for having to go to multiple PTQs to qualify. If there was only a one-shot deal and he didn't make it the first time out, that's it. No more chances.
