'Mad World' by Gary Jules (a cover of an old Tears For Fears track... if it sounds familiar, its from Donnie Darko)

'Strange & Beautiful' by Aqualung (and in fact go ahead and get any more you can find, he`s just brought out his debut album and they're all good.

And if you can handle the strong Essex accent, from my favourite artist...
'St Monday' by Billy Bragg

And finally a quick tour of one of the great British bands of the past decade, who I doubt you`ve ever heard of...
'Lipgloss' by Pulp
'Babies' by Pulp
'Do you remember the first time' by Pulp
'Common People' by Pulp
'Party Hard' by Pulp
'This is Hardcore' by Pulp
'Bob Lind' by Pulp
'Bad Cover Version by Pulp

Which is two songs from each of their last 4 albums, if you`re only gonna download one of them, well dont, because they're all absolutely fantastic, meaningful, edgy, real, yet catchy tunes.

...

I like European and Canadian artists. Though I try to stay away from anything rock, anything pure dance or club or techno or trance or rap; anything pure new-age, pure world...

I might as well recommend the eclectic trip-hop/electronica/classical/new-age fusions: Astral Hymn by Solar Twins; Make a Wish by Conjure One; The Wheel of Time by Sandra, and last but not least Inner Sanctum by Delerium...this song sums up a great philosophy in few sentences (but many people will think it is a bunch of incoherent words, so...)

If you are in a good mood, these songs are not for you. They are haunting, gloomy, rainy, cloudy, moody, and as far as they can be from any ray of sunshine, or even, any ray of light...

Auqulung? Maybe they're Jethro Tull fans...(which is my personal favorite band, and by default my favorite Brit band. Too bad they havn't done anything spectaculer since, oh...1972 or so. But, they're still touring and I've seen them a few times. Yeah for me.)

Canadian! You mean Rush right?
Yes I know there are more canadian bands than just Rush... but the names of the two groups I listen to most nowadays appear in this sentence. :)

JT (forget the ull.com) (lol about the 1972 comment) and Pink Floyd are also good.

But this thread is supposed to be about songs, so I'd better say some.

YYZ -- Rush
Close to the Edge -- Yes
Skating Away (on the thin Ice of a new day) -- Tull
Dogs (well actually all of Animals, except pigs on the wing) -- Floyd

Actually, you might as well look at my sig too, it has (EDIT - had) lyrics from Machine Messiah which is also by Yes.

Gizmo--I can't download quite at the moment, so I might as well ask, what kind of music is this? (other than British, that is :p)

What sort of music is it? Hmm....

Well, it`s sort of intelligent pop, I guess. Not Britney Spears pop, but 'The Smiths' pop. I dunno. Its not rock, its not metal, its not dance, its not punk, its not rap, its not anything. Its just music.

Aqualung is a classically trained young pianist who wrote and produced the entire album working solo in his bedroom, and he sprang to fame when the song I named there was used as an advert. He went from unsigned to hit debut album in a month.

Billy Bragg is an old timer. I guess he`s folk, really. He`s popularly hailed as the best British lyricist of our generation.

Pulp were one of the 'big three' bands in the Britpop era of the mid-nineties, alongside Blur and Oasis, but they were never really anything like them in terms of their sound, as their roots are way back in the 80s. Pulp sang songs about the people lost in the margins of society - the nerds, the geeks, the 'Misshapes'. While the music was pop, the lyrics were far darker - dirtier, with the most common recurring themes being those of social exclusion, and sexual longing and frustration.

I'm trying real hard to push Pulp on you all... they're one of my favourite bands, they never even got close to doing the US so you wont have heard of them, and I think theres plenty of you who would appreciate the lyrics of them.

Erm...when I said you`d like the lyrics I didnt mean to suggest that you were all sexually frustrated nerds... erm... oops.
They`re just good songs and great lyrics, and Pulp always did attract a slightly more... discerning audience than your average band.

Yep…I have never heard of any of those songs/groups before. If I have time I will check it out. Truth is most music doesn’t intrigue me, if it's not personal or special, ill forget about it at the drop of a pin. But, if you like it more power to you.

Hmmm...

I like early-mid nineties alt-rock and classic rock mostly.

My favorite band is the Smashing Pumpkins. You either love them, like me, or hate them. (Like Svenmonkey.) If you've only heard their most well-known song, "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", you might write them off as just another angry "My life is hopeless, grar, I'm angry!" psuedo-metal band, but they have really, really amazing songs, like "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" or "Mayonaise" that can be both amazingly rocking and beautiful at the same time. If you are very critical about vocals, the Pumpkins are kind of an aquired taste, because of Billy Corgan's nasally voice.

One of the best parts is how diverse they are. They have a 28-song double album called "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" that switches from a soft, beautiful song like "Stumbleine" to an insane gothic industrial metal song like "X.Y.U" Or from an amazing pop song like "1979" to a crazy, distorted song like "Tales of a Scorched Earth"

If you're interested, pick up "Siamese Dream" by SP. Some poeple think it's the best album of the nineties. Then again, some people think Britney Spears and N*Sync are the best bands of the nineties, so you have to find out yourself.

Dunno if ole Giz still checks back here, but just wanted to say, consider Pulp successfully pushed. Actually quite by coincidence, my friend who is a brit-rock fan found them (some time back really; I'm just lazy) and immediately hooked me on 'Common People.' Really fantastic stuff.
