DUke: Sorry, I totally didn't get what you were saying to me (way up above).

From what I understand of it, I don't think you need a disenchant in beliefs to do #2. It all depends how P.O.ed you are at me.

And that's as far as I got

...if I'm the type that believes that violence never solves anything, then I wouldn't hit you, no matter how mad you'd made me. There wouldn't be a dependancy on how much angry I have at all...

Cateran Emperor, I agree with you to the fullest. I really don't understand why people themselves point out their colors. Who cares about the colors?

...besides pointing it out and showing it off, racism also exists for another reason that I know of. From my experiences with many racists, all of them really had nothing better to do...no life of their own, so like the usual, they would find a life of other, and start criticizing everything about it. Besides, when you put down people, you usually put them down to raise your own low self-esteem and to cover your insecurities. Most people want to think that they are at least better than someone out there, so they take the time and make others feel bad about themselves...this way, they'll make a believe that they are better, and everyone else is not...it's a delusional thing. ONLY insecure, low self-esteemed people do it. The others don't NEED to put others down to feel good, because they ALREADY feel good about who they are...

In trying to relate your scenario to the original question:

I get the belief part (violence doesn't solve anything) and I get the situation (I PO'ed you) so what's the task you're trying to accomplish? To make you feel better?

...Spiderman, deep down inside of me, it would make me feel better. Also, I can show the world around me that I CAN defend myself, EVEN though I don't really want to hit you. Suppose that you make me mad when there was NOBODY present, just you and I, I probably would NOT take the same actions as if there were people around (there's no one out there to prove anything to), so I would just talk it over. In public, however, I would take differnet action probably ONLY because I want to defend my self-image and poor ego...

See what I mean? If I don't hit you in public, and act the SAME way I would if we were in a private conversation, than that means I have total control over my "beliefs" and myself: which is to NOT become enraged easily, no matter who's watching, and no matter what others may think.

By losing my control, and "beliefs", I would hit you...probably for nothing EXCEPT to show the world that I can do something about a person makin' me mad...

But by striking back, are you accomplishing your goal more efficiently, or just making it easier? I think there's a subtle difference in this case...

...both more efficiently and more easily.

What I'm doin' is, by strikin', I have MADE myself feel better about myself. How did I do it? Easily: strike you even though you don't deserve it and even though it's against my beliefs. How is that efficient? Myself esteem is way up in the sky now...I didn't have to work for it...I didn't have to set up goals. Simply, everyone was EXPECTING me to do something, and I did (even though it's wrong)...everyone now is "BOOING" YOU, and "WOWING" me...I feel great...you're the loser, and I am not. All I did is satisfy society's hunger for violence. How efficient is that?

Okay, but suppose your blow didn't give you the desired results so you DIDN'T feel better (I was unaffected; your blow glanced off, whatever). And everyone is still laughing at you, no WOWing or BOOing :) So you still abandoned your belief to take the EASY route to make yourself feel better by striking me, yet it failed to be efficient because you still don't feel better (as opposed to getting me back in some other way).
