This is a poll to just express whether or not you're in favor of changes to the CPA to cover general gaming instead of Magic. The thread about the topic can be found here:
http://www.casualplayers.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13802

This is not a vote to change the site! This is just a gauge to see how people feel without forcing them to speak.

Note: This thread's poll expires in 30 days. At which time, voting will be closed.

No, changes are scary. With my dying breath I will defend the status quo.

I am sure my vote doesn't count, but...

Obviously there needs to be some change.

When I first arrived, there used to be alot of responsive nature from people who came to this site. Maybe because there was more of a target audience at that time for 'casualplayers', or just a slight increase in numbers, however it seems to have died down.

The answer here is "Yes" without even the slightest pause in my voice.

Does it hurt the site?

No.

Will it help it?

Surely, it will, and must if you want to continue on. Because I fear I hear the fat lady singing and death knocking on this door...

But only for a few changes, in that I feel it's important to maintain our primary focus on Magic, at least for now. I don't mean it to say I think we need to limit the number of changes - just their emphasis.

Does that make sense?

Yes, it does.

(And every vote counts! As long as you remember to register that vote in the poll, that is.)

This is not a vote to change or not change the site. This is merely a poll to gauge opinion. The results of this poll may further advance or hinder the motion to change the site, but this should not be seen as the place to vote for the future of the site.

There *huff* *huff* heh....

With that said, I'd like to point you all out to the AGN network, to which Brainburst belongs. There are some wise businesspeople who have a network of gaming sites, based on games that are widely searched for and will of course bring in traffic (and for them, revenue).

Magic: The Gathering (ccg)
http://www.brainburst.com/
http://www.playordraw.com/

Marvel/DC Vs. System (ccg)
http://www.vsuniverse.com/

YuGiOh (ccg/vg)
http://www.duelyugioh.com/

Pokemon (ccg/vg)
http://www.pokeschool.com/

Star Wars Galaxies (mmo)
http://www.swgcenter.com/
http://www.swgcreatures.com/

World of Warcraft (mmo)
http://wow.warcraftstrategy.com/

Warcraft 3 (vg)
http://wc3.warcraftstrategy.com/

Everquest 2 (mmo)
http://www.eq2center.com/

As you can see, they cover a wide variety of games, but their genres happen to fall mainly in the Nerd Fantasy (tm) department. No Doom sites, because Star Wars is more attractive to Nerds (while Doom is most attractive to frantic-visioned click mutants ;) ). It is working for them. You'll see they only cover the four most popular CCGs, two of them being the much maligned YGO and Pokemon.

However, as much content as they have general gaming-wise, they also keep the stuff in separate pages. We could not do that here at CPA, but for those against the idea of changing, it reinforces their opinion by setting a precedent: The most successful gaming sites do not crowd one front page with everything. Instead, they make a network of individual front pages.

Hmm...

though we - I say we... Ed doesn't at this time seem to be able to keep the separate topics on separate pages,
They could at least be kept in thier respective forums...

Off-Topic, Battle, Political, Games, and Suggestions seem to be the only ones that would be "general"...

I think Trading would have to exist in multiple forums just to keep each aligned properly and not create a "thrifty-nickel" type of classified advertising place...

I voted yes - minimal...;)

Not sure what is meant by "minimal" and "few", so I took few...

I think the Magic forums would still be the most heavily used since that was the original vision of the site, but if it happens that another game such as D&D (as an example) starts to draw a lot of people, that's fine with me.

The only conclusion I could draw from the voting, so far, is that maybe more discussion about this matter should be explored.

Inconclusive...

IMO:

It's about 77% voting yes to change - little or a lot...

I think that's conclusive - but I also think that the number of voters skews it a little...

The only question is - would the percentage stay about the same if more people continued to vote?...

I believe that we can expand our content, but the main focus should remain the same. It's a well known fact that our members dabble in more than just Magic: The Gathering. Additionally, we could attract more members to our site.

However, I will personally K.I.L.L. (Kick In the Little Lumps) any member that talks about Pokemon strategy, deck construction, or the like.

Pokemon is a highly strategic card game with a varied assortment of decisions. Why, one could become immersed all day in the first decision of the day with one's Pokemon deck:

...how to destroy it. ;) :D

The Mewtwo deck was pretty strong from what I heard... they even compared it to going perpetual in Magic...

I can understand people disliking Pokemon based on its sheer appeal to anime fanboy wackiness. It is a pretty crappy show, video game and card game. However, it does have a few tiny shreds of merit.

Unlike Yugioh, which is absolutely horrid to watch (only saw about ten minutes of one episode and never wanted to see another) and the game plays like a retarded number cruncher tournament for morons. Oh! This Rainbow Fish does 200000000 damage to you!!!!1 pwn3d!!!!111

Doesn't every number in that game have two extra zeros at the end? In high school, these losers were playing it with calculators to do stuff. Calculators! Come on, anyone who made it to high school SHOULD be able to slice off the extra zeros and perform the calculations mentally...

Pokemon "strategy" couldn't really be discussed. The game is so vastly simple compared to Magic that no strategy is involved. Everything is intuitive. But I remember one of the cards was a personal Wheel of Fortune for free (don't remember what it was called, but I can dig up the magazine I saw it in). Magic could use THAT for sure...

Yes, Professor Oak. All "spells" in Pokemon are Trainer cards, and they are almost always free. The problem, with such a powerful card, is how to make it in line with cards like Bill, which only let you draw two cards for free? Of course, the best players packed 4x Bill AND 4x Professor Oak and just dominated with hideous card advantage. Coupled with the problem of their being free was the fact you could to more than one in a turn...for free. Yes, the game was, and is, much too simple.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is Magic, where everything has a cost. That can be a huge pain, though much more thought out. Things like mana screw and wipe out your ability to cast spells. To counter this, you put in a few more lands and mana supplies, but that runs the risk of mana flooding yourself...sigh.

This is where the Vs. system does things nicely. Characters and Equipment go off a similar resource system to Magic, but Plot Twists and Locations only relate to that system only in their threshold requirements. Basically, in Vs, you can play a card that said "Draw five cards" for free, but you have to meet its threshold, and the threshold on it might be five or six, for example, which would mean you couldn't play this "really cool FREE card" until turn five or six at the very earliest. To prevent screw, every card can be used as a resource. Like in Mental Magic, where you set a spell face-down and say it is instead a land. However, when you do this, only Characters and Equipment are played as resources INSTEAD of as their types. The fun things about Plot Twists and Locations is that, even if you play them as resources, you can flip them over anytime you reach threshold and play them as what they really are. It totally prevents screw, flood, and the rampant rule of freebies. :D

Um, you realize the target age for Pokemon is a bit lower than that of Magic, where "card advantage" isn't dissected and analyzed so much. It's just meant to be a collectible fun game to the kiddies...
