A fine question. Estates in your hand accomplish nothing. At the end of the game (defined in an earlier post as when either the Province cards are exhausted or three total stockpiles are exhausted), each player totals up the Victory points in their entire deck. The player with the most Victory points in his deck wins.

This is what happens when I don't read the rules :)

So forgive me, but are these Estate cards shuffled back into my deck after each turn, so the ones in my hand are essentially dead cards right now? I just have 2 Victory points so far if the game were to end right now?

Your Estate cards get discarded from your hand every turn. In hand, they are dead cards. If the game were to miraculously end right now, you would have 3 Victory points (each player starts the game with 3 Estates and 7 Coppers).

So I guess I'll play the Woodcutter, which bumps my treasure up to 4 and I have 2 buys, so I'll get two Cellars.
