New Basic D&D game?

Anyone interested in going back in time and playing a Basic D&D game? You know, the one where you can just be a fighter, cleric, thief, magic-user, dwarf, elf, or halfling as the classes? DarthFerret and mythosx expressed an interest; probably at leats 2 more would be good...

That sounds great, but unfortunately, I'm 6,500 miles away from my books and my dice :(

You don't need your books and dice. I'll do it all for you...

I probably should explain. It'd more be like one of Rando's stories in which you tell me what your character does/wants to do and I handle all of the "behind the scene" stuff like rolling to hit, damage, etc. All you know is whether you're successful at hitting the monster or finding stuff or whatever - you just concentrate on role-playing more.

I only played D&D very few times (2-4). I don't even remember what edition it was really (I think 3rd). So I'm not experienced or anything, but if I wouldn't get in the way, I'm interested...

I don't see how you can get in the way, as long as you "role-play", you should be fine.

So is this four definite? DarthFerret, mythosx, Ferret, and Oversoul to start out with?

I'd be interested in playing. Though I've never played a "basic" D&D game, just 3rd and 3.5...guess I'm high tech. Should we rolelup characters? or tell you what we want to be and you'll roll them up?

Cool... a fifth person. Thanks for joining in.

Okay, here's a thread from my first attempt to start a game up long ago. It basically explains the stats of STRength, INTelligence, WISdom, DEXterity, CONstitution, and CHaRisma if you don't know already. You guys get 75 points to put into the stats.

I'm going to give you max HP to start.

If you don't know how the classes work in Basic as opposed to Advanced/3.x, here's a quick rundown. You have your fighter, cleric, thief, and magic-user who are by default "human" (there's really no race subcategory). Fighters can use all weapons and armor, clerics can use any armor but no edged weapons, thiefs can only use leather armor but no shield but any weapon, and magic-users cannot use armor or shields and can only use daggers.

Then you have the non-human races which are classes unto themselves. Dwarves are the "fighters", have better saving throws, and can use any armor and shields and any weapon except long bows or two handed swords. Elves are a "fighter/magic-user" and can use any armor, shield, weapon, and cast spells (of course, they advance in levels much slower). They also can find secret doors fairly well. Halflings are kinda "mini-fighters" - they also can't use two-handed swords or long bows, but they have better than most saving throws, +1 t hit when using missile weapons, -2 to AC when facing larger than man-size opponents, and even a slight "hide-in-shadows" effect. They basically have a lot of special abilities to make up for their seemingly small size.

I'll set up the equipment in a bit.

All right, here's the stuff you get:

Weapons (dmg)

Axes

Battle Axe (two-handed) (1-8)
Hand Axe (1-6)

Bows

Crossbow (1-6)
Long Bow (1-6)
Short Bow (1-6)

Daggers

Normal (1-4)
Silver (1-4)

Swords

Short (1-6)
Long (1-8)
Two-Handed (1-10)

Other Weapons

Mace* (1-6)
Club* (1-4)
Pole-Arm (two-handed) (1-10)
Sling w/30 Stones* (1-4)
Spear (1-6)
War Hammer* (1-6)

*can be used by cleric

Armor (AC)

Clothing Only (9)
Shield Only (8)
Leather (7)
Leather w/Shield (6)
Chain Mail (5)
Chain Mail w/Shield (4)
Plate Mail (3)
Plate Mail w/Shield (2)

I think I'll have it so you can either have
  • Plate and one melee weapon (not two-handed)
  • Plate & Shield & normal dagger
  • Chain & Shield and one melee weapon & Sling
  • Chain, melee weapon, and any ranged weapon

You all have Backpacks, 12 Torches (not sure if I want to bother with light sources right now), 1 Large Sack, 2 Small Sacks, and 50' Rope.

So PM me with the details of your characters (class, stats and equipment).

Though I'll wait to pick my race/class until after seeing how the rest of the group shapes up. It makes playing it a bit easier if the group has some balance between magic and beef, and life without a thief in the group to detect/remove traps is usually a short life indeed...;)

Any ideas on what type of setting we're talking about here, Spidey? Wilderness? Caves? Dungeons? Urban?

Well, I just PM'd Spidey (I hope I didn't forget something) and picked thief for my class.
