A bit back I was asking for ideas for running a Scout troop. Well here's a update on how things stand.

I'm still helping out, maybe stuck in post for a time.
We now have a Scout Leader.
The Helper has had her 18th b'day and has got her Assistants warrant.
So we are doing fine there.

We put the boys in for the local District 5-a-side football contest. All who could attend did, giving me a 6 man squad to play in the under 13's. Did I say, that I somehow ended up as the coach, via the fact that I was the only male leader. So when I started asking the boys the rules & they did not know either, we know we did not stand a chance. After two practices in the hut, where the team work skills were, that you did not attack the players omn your side, only pass the ball if you want to offload it so you can attack someone! (Well not quite that bad but close).

Got to the sports hall, found we had been placed in the over 13' pool, had to stop the boys legging it.
Got us in the right pool. Only four teams, but 2 from the troop which had won 4 out of the last 5 years. Played 5 minute games, 6 games of round-robin. Lost 2 of 6 games, to the fav troops A team. Our goalie, who's a Ice-Hockey puck blocker (was getting comments on his funny style of play, kept forgetting to catch the ball on rebounds) put his knee out of joint and then back in, all in one game.
Played in the final (your shocked, you should have seen us leaders) against the Fav team (who had beat us twice), had extra time & then penalties. When down to last of the first group, we WON 2-1. The boys did not find out who won until they got up into the stands, had been to keyed up to track who was winning. Not bad as it turns out on the way there the boys had been deciding not if we would win games, but if we would score more than 2 goals total, I think they decided that we would not.

Now that the foot & mouth problem is on a down turn, we are allowed out about around our area, so we are going camping in a months time. As well as doing a Cycle trip come map reading exicise.

My Mother took me to my weekly den meeting and I had not yet earned my "Bobcat" pin but I wore it to the meeting because I knew I WOULD be earning it that night (hey, I was cocky :)). Anyway, the Den Mom's boy was in the group and greeted us at the door and had the hugest tantrum known to mankind!!!!!! because of me wearing my pin, OY!
Second reason, I finally became a "Weblow" <stop chuckling!!!> and that's when I called it quits!

I became a Second Class scout before dropping out. Too many merit badges and not enough wilderness outings. It didn't help that the merit badge sessions were early Saturday morning, neither :)

The US system seems to be done on year ranks.
THe system here is you join a single section, where all the age groups are mixed, and you then work at the progress awards as you want if you want.
Merit badge work is done normally during meeting, on your own, or for special ones on weekends (like woodsman, camping, ie where more time or an instructor from outside the group is needed.

In the Cubs here you are in Six's, named by colour of the woggle worn by that six. A "six can be made up of 4 to 6 boys and or girls. In charge of the six is a Sixer, with a Seconder as his backup. Do you use the same.

Scouts use patrols 4 to 8 persons, have a Patrol Leader (PL) and an Assistant Patrol Leader (APL). Patrols are named by creatures, IDed by patrol badges with pic of creature. Also have Senoir Patrol Leader, who normal is the oldest Troop member and is not in charge of a Patrol, but sits between the PL's & the Leaders

Beavers (6 to 8 year olds) divide into Lodges (we use colours & have half the Colony in each lodge)
No ranks for lodge leader, we just use the oldest boy.

Right I'm off now to see the headteacher at the infant school I went to, about the Beavers or they have final found out about us boys trying to pee out of the window above the urinals in the outside loos, well we were only about 7 at the time!

Unfortunately, my scouting career lasted little more than two weeks. The highlights included a camping trip where I was locked in a car trunk for a few hours. I ruined the fun of those locking me in when I didn't panic, though. ;)

I've nothing against the system though.
