Next Feburary, Legion Events is working with a travel group called Gamer Adventures to hold the first ever Magic Cruise! (Legion Events is the premier tournament organizer that runs all side events at US Pro Tours, US Nationals and Worlds when in the US.) Its a five-day cruise filed with stops in Cozumel, Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Oh yeah, and a whole bunch of Magic events; casual and competitive.

The cruise starts on the weekend that Conflux is being released, so we're going to have a Conflux release event on board. There are also leagues and a multi-day Cruise Championship. I know you guys are casual player, so we are trying to serve that population too with an EDH night etc. We are also willing to take suggestions.

Also at least one of the prizes will be a signed canvas print of the original Lord of Atlantis art.

Plus this is also a full cruise with on ship entertainment; restaurants, bars, casino (I think) etc. So Magic for you, general cruise stuff for significant other?? Keep in mind that it won't all be Magic for you and you can do whatever you want.

You can find more information here:

    http://legionevents.com/cruise/

    Hope to see you there!

Does the $89 registration fee include ALL the Magic events, or does that just allow you to play and you still have to pay as you go for individual events?

Also what's the occupancy on the ship and what % will be Magic players? The Ecstacy looks like a relatively small ship (~1000 ppl, maybe?), so I'm trying to gauge the general odor of the ship after being filled with Magic players for 5 days.

Not sure. We should inquire with the advertiser.

Yup. We have to charge a flat fee for all events as the cruise line does not allow 'sales' by other groups on board.

I ~believe~ Magic players will be around 200. Keep in mind this is Magic players and their non-magic playing significant others. I do not know the capacity of the Ecstasy, but we will not be the entire ship.

EDIT: I've since found out the capacity of the ship is 2000. So...not a row boat.

    How's that for a response?!

    When is the registration deadline?

We have 200 spots and we want / except to fill them by early December. So if you are interested, the earlier the better!

Thanks for the info. $89 seems like a really good deal for a league, sealed deck and three days worth of drafts.

Do Magic players have to bring a significant other? I'm imagining most of the 200 would consist of pairs of (male) college-aged Magic players splitting the cost of a room. Of course, if the rest of the ship is filled with normals, then the hygiene upkeeps might actually get paid in some valiant attempt to impress the sunbathing hotties occupying the upper decks.

FYI, that's not infi drafts, I believe you can be in up to 2 side drafts. Keep in mind that there likely be a draft in the Cruise Championship.

    No.

    Lots of questions.

Does the registration fee include the registration for the PTQ I noticed was on the tail end of the trip?

Are the listed prices ($485/545/985) per person or per room?

Do the planned events take place while while are anchored at our stops, requiring us to choose between outdoor excursions and indoor seclusion OR does the schedule line up so people can enjoy all of them?

The registration fee covers all events. Whether or not these will be a PTQ is unknown at this point.

Pricing assumes double occupancy per room. So it'd be 485 each for two people in one room.

No. Events start up again that night after you've explored the ports and surrounding areas. It's not just Magic, there is actual cruise stuff too!

    Correct!

Hmm... that's not a bad deal. The only big cost would be getting to Galveston. How does one get to Galveston? Generally, to which airport and then how?

EDIT: Nevermind. I see that it's an hour from Houston..... ooo.... plane tickets to Houston are too expensive for my pocket....

I think this is a great idea and am only wondering why it has taken so long when there are a lot of other "theme" cruises around! :)

Unfortunately, I can't go due to financial reasons but even then, my wife would *kill* me if I spent our "vacation" (because that's what this would be) playing Magic. :)

Hmm...takes off from Galveston...I live in Houston....may have to mention this to me wife.

P.S. some of the territory I cover is in Galveston and I will be there on Thursday. Heh.

"Starving" is such a relative term...

I know this is a more casual board and I don't want to necro the thread, but we have confirmed there WILL be a PTQ on board for Honolulu on the last day at sea. That means it will be an Extended qualifier. I just hope that potentially playing Magic in the Gulf of Mexico AND Hawaii won't be too much for some of you.

Also, you can sign up here!

WOTC had this about the cruise today in Brian David-Marshall's article.

I thought the following was interesting (bold by me)

If it was envisioned as a "married with children", that'd probably be the family vacation right there... not that there's anything wrong with it and cruises are great, but it's usually big chunk of money for the family... plus any family activities would be scheduled around the Magic events... unless they were during the "at sea" time, when there's not a lot to do...

I'm not putting the whole thing down, just interesting that that was the initial audience it's geared towards...

    LOL @ "normals."
