Is Mainstream Magic possible?

I got this in e-mail. Names changed to protect the victims.........

"We're all a bunch of dorks. That doesnt make us smart. So what that 40% of
magic players are either mensa or submensa quality thinkers. 40% are just
average intelligence and some odd number are morons. I think i am in between
the morons and the submensa but since when have you known an idiot who was
aware of exactly how stupid they were. I assume of course that we are
measuring intelligence by IQ not dick/breast size. You know the New York
method as opposed to the Hollywood method. Either way I think I end up in the
middle. Not smart enough to be a genius but clever enough to know it. So what
if I have a 135 IQ when the top 40% are 30-50 pts higher? Hey at least I use
sleaves! Magic aint just for the Savants of the world. And let me tell you
Ive known plenty of smart people who wouldnt understand Magic. not because
its too complex or high on the intellectual scale (its not) but because it is
outside their field of interest. There are all kinds of ways of measuring
intelligence. As far as i know magic isn't considered one of them. I could
give you examples of magical dumbasses but I assume youd fall asleep before I
finished.

"Well OK since you insist, just one to put the topic to rest. There was a guy
(mid to late twenties) who used to come to (our regular store). Big guy, not too
bright. One day after trading with my friend Mike he stole Mike's bag with
his binders and other cards. A week later he comes back. He walks around
holding Mike's Jansport and trading cards he had taken out of Mike's binder.
He walks up to Mike and asks him if he wants to trade and hands him a stack
of Mike's cards. Now how did Mike know they were his cards? Well some were
somewhat unique since Mike collects and trades misprints. Mike recognizes
his cards and basically jumps the guy verbally. At this point I and several
other (our store) regulars suround the guy and force him to stand there while Mike
whips him verbally. After a 10-minute rant Mike calms down a little and grabs
his bag and opens it. Sure enough all his cigs and other things are inside
it. (The store owner) is wanting to call the cops but Mike's sense of mercy prevails. I
mean who returns to the scene of the crime and trys to fence the stolen goods
to the Victim? A magic playing idiot, thats who."

My teammate at Team Hacked, Paul Emerson Leicht. Paul is one funny guy, eh? :)

One of my posts on this thread was published at Star City on January 16, 2001 under "Submissions". The problem is, I didn't submit it. Who did? I do not know. But I have people finding out. As far as I can tell it was a practical joker, but I found it disconcerting nonetheless. Besides being inappropriate, it insults this wonderful thread that Fire Slinger started and those who have posted here, as well as myself, Star City, and this home away from home of ours, the CPA. Let's not make an issue out of this, however, as Planeshift is right on the horizon, and any further discussion on this annoying and unfortunate subject just takes time and thought away from what looks to be an amazing set.

Huh, that does suck and seems sort of odd. Not that I'm a great judge of character :) but I don't think any of our active posters would do such a thing (I would hope not). Sounds like one of our 900+ lurkers...
