It's been awhile but I think 'Cog and Zog' was MEANT to be a sterotypical portrayal (heck, he says it in the beginning). The extreme of the two ends of the spectrum.
Ferrett's article is more conciliatory and either means the two can co-exist or just saying there's no shame in playing a card game. It's also appears to be a real-life anecdote.
In other words, I believe the two are different enough in intent that comparisons cannot fully be made. It's like comparing the Star Wars universe with that of Star Trek...
