I will make sure I'm ready to quickly cast sleep when we open the door if need be... (like more clerics... don't need any of their wicked magic.)

All right, you rest up a turn and Si'Nat opens the door...

When the door opens you see a man chanting in an unknown language. He's standing inside a blood red circle, around which strange symbols have been painted. The man has long black hair and is wearing red robes. Hanging from his belt is a mace, and a red eye has been painted in the center of his forehead. Inside the circle, in front of the man, is a strange looking sword. It appears to be made of ruby and is resting on a plush black velvet cushion. As the man continues to chant, the sword begins to pulse with a crimson light.

You're not surprised because Rondo heard his chanting... and he is! Surprised, that is...

Round 1 - Party surprises man.

Just a confirmation of your actions, whether the above info changed anything or not...

Ok, If I recognize the chanting, will I recognize the spell? If so, can I disrupt it? If not, then I will wait one round for the ranged fighters to get thier stuff off.

Si'Nat: Changing weapons takes a round. So you're not going to be able to change to your bow and shoot in the same round.

Bertrem: You would be able to recognize it, but you won't be able to disrupt it - in Basic, spells go off the round they're cast. No long casting times or such.

I will go ahead and cast a spell, but instead of Sleep, it'll be Magic Missile. That should disrupt his little one man ritual...

Si'Nat moves inside the room to the side of the door and shoots but misses.
Cugel moves inside to the other side of the door and shoots but goes wide.
Patrick murmurs the words to his spell Magic Missile and a glowing arrow forms and shoots across the room, hitting the man square in the back. He flinches a little but remains chanting.
Rondo and Kurik charge in with their weapons. They're just a tad too eager and their blows go wide.
Bertrem dashes in, trying to grab the sword, but misses and skids across the floor.

Round 2 - Party has initiative.

Even though you can act first, the man manages to yell "Help!" A voice from behind a door in the south wall answers "Hang on, we're coming!".

(Trains the bow on the door the yell came from... ready to fire upon those that might enter...)

"Keep after him guys - steady your attack.... Cugel - train your bow on the door the others might come through... We should be able to pick them off in order..."

(I'm thinking this might also provide some sort of blockage in the door, and hinder the way for the others to get through if we hit and kill...)

If the door opens into the room, will attempt to block it...If it opens out, will try to get the sword again!
