orgg mentioned the two in the Lucky Charms thread in Voting so now I'm confused... can someone explain the difference between the two? Thanks.

Lost me on that one - just a bit...

I'd say Core Game is the Magic Expansion Sets (Blocks)

Basic Set - 8th edition - something beginners should be starting with...;)

An ideal artifact for the Core Game is Spellbook. It's 'free' and has an effect that breaks one of the basic rules of the game. The other point of artifacts is to shore up weaknesses of the colors. This will have to be used in the Core Game in all probability.

The Charms I belive should firmly stay in the Basic Set in some form or another--
This is what he says. It appears there's some difference between the "Core Game" and "Basic Set" - is the Core Game something like you get two packs or decks of 40 cards (maybe from the Basic Set like 8th ed) to try to learn the game? I seem to remember his front page article saying something like that... so the Core Game is just a subset of the Basic Game?

Well - from WoTC's product page:

The Core Set - Eighth Edition marks the 10th Anniversary of Magic and to celebrate the event, this set was created with a very special concept in mind: it contains at least one new card never before printed in a Core Set from every Magic expansion ever produced by Wizards* (34 sets in all!).

They aren't showing any 8th "starter" sets - but there was the eighth promo decks you got when purchasing the MTGO disk...

I don't think so - when he said the core game - i'm not sure he meant core set - I think "core game" is more of the expansions... personally...

Maybe we need orgg to answer... he's not on when I am, so I was hoping someone else knew. Oh well.

'Core Game' is the rediculous name given to the 'starter set' including a bunch of junk cards and no summetry.

If you buy it, it has an old copy of MOL on disc and a code on the back of it to redeem it on MOL-- a good idea, if the set was worthwile.

The 'Core Game' set contains some cards that cannot be gotten via packs. I believe I listed those in my first rant against it. Part Two coming quite soon, Ya'll!

Before they decided to call 8th Edition the Core Set, the term "Basic Set" referred to the, well, Basic Sets, like Alpha, Beta, Revised, 4th, etc. So in other words, yes, Basic Set and Core SEt are the same thing - in this case they are referring to 8th Edition.

The only thing that I am interested in is the rumor that portal will become type one legal. I all ready picked up a couple of Personal Tutors, and now I need to pick up Cruel Tutor, three more Ancient Craving some a set of Deja Vu. Gift of Estate looks really good as well Jungle Lion will work well in my stompy deck. Goblin Lore may not be too bad. Nature's Ruin is a cool looking Perish. Norwood Priestess would be good if there were worthwhile green creatures. Renewing Dawn also looks cool. Piracy could be fun. For only 2 more, Rightous Fury has a nice bonus.

I also need as many Darkmor Sorcresses as possible... but that is for a very personaly collection.

Rooser: But the "core game" is what orgg/train is talking about with a MOL/MTGO disc with some "starter decks". So there's three terms: "core game", "core set", and "basic set", the last two meaning the same thing, correct?

yes - the last 2 mean the same...

the core game does come with cards not found in the core set...

Okay, then that's pretty confusing and dopey to use "core" in two different places. They ought to go back to "starter" or whatever.

*Later during a news interview - concerning WoTC, train stated the following...*

"I don't know where they got that Coat - but I didn't cook it..."
