Computer Problem

For some reason, the Sounds and Audio Devices controller in Windows won't allow me to choose any audio device other than "Modem Line Playback #4" even though I have both integrated audio and a Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer installed and with updated drivers. Both audio devices show up in the Device Manager, too.

Makes no sense to me. Hopefully one of you folks will help me out.

By the way, I'm on Windows XP and my speakers are plugged into the integrated audio.

Get rid of your modem line Playback #4 and reboot... windows should then have to locate one of your other devices/drivers and set them to default, or ask which you'd prefer...

We have similar problems with CD-ROM drives that end up with a lot of grease build-up in them... so we're forced to bypass the issue by using a Zip drive and then reinstlling the CD-ROM... Windows just always goes with what it's set to...

You could also get on Tech-Net and see if they would have more detailed ideas or answers...

I got rid of the modem line playback, but now I restarted and it just says "No Audio Device" and still won't let me change the audio device.

There are different types of sound and it could be separate drivers. Try a couple of things.

Do "Add new hardware" and see if it can auto-detect.

Find the web site for the manufacturer and see if there is a better driver.

Uninstall the drivers for the Soundblaster also and then try the above.

I'm surprised your on XP and it didn't auto-detect on the boot...

My computer doesn't auto-detect much of anything, and when I go into the Add New Hardware wizard, it just asks me if I've installed the hardware yet, like it doesn't detect anything new.

Anyway, still no sound. I think I'll throw an email at Microsoft tech support and hope I get a response.

You can search for stuff like that on Technet - probably before you get a response from Microsoft...:p

Did you build your computer or is it factory... that would save alot of typing. None the less... heres how i fixed it. I had an MSI motherboard... which doesnt comply with some Creative Sound Cards for some reason... so I was using my modem as my sound output. I also had on board... but it wouldnt allow me to use it or the sound card. So when I would go to my prefs on windows n set it up for either device rather than the modem my comp would crash and what not. The problem was the clash... so I just bought a new card and modem... the modem was old anyhow... and factory too it sucked. I installed the s card first. Made sure my speaks worked... also had to buy one with dual cd inputs since I have 3 cd drives. Then I installed the modem... and turned off the fax functions for it so there wouldnt be any sound options available. It worked... just whenever windows detects the hardware... whether u buy new or use ur current... do not let it update the drivers... install them from the cds or disks and if u need anything download them from the net. The windows driver update will install the sound drivers for both devices. This can be a pain to delete... with XP especially... or ME for that matter. Or u could do what I do... when your tired of upgrading ur comp (for gaming I assume) buy one or build one. I build my old... it was good for a while cuz I had it set up on lan at my work place... but I just decided to buy one from the net. Pick up any pc gamer and there is plenty of good ads in there to surf to. I got mine from Ibuypower. It is nice... top of the line hardware (512mb ddr ram, 2.4 pent 4, 128mb Ge4 Ti 4400, SB X Gamer, 80gb hd...) got monitor and everything but a mouse cuz I got an intelli from work... only cost $1200 + shipping... nice deal... 21in monitor too. Try switching out your hardware and installing manually via cds and internet... see if that works and make sure u plug ur cd rom outs into the right slots on ur card. Hope that helps some

Mine's a factory Dell, and I'm pretty sure the motherboard complies with the SB Audigy Gamer, since it worked for a while (it froze the computer occasionally, though, so I got some tech support from Creative that led me to this soundless state).

So you're saying to uninstall the modem and install everything with the sound card's included disk, then install the modem, right?

pretty much... just install your s card first tho... since the modem wants to take over. U can full install the s card if u want... since u want to use it any ways. Just make sure modem only thinks it is a modem... nothing else.

Don't you just hate modems that want to rule the world and not just transmit electrical surges...

Good old Windows now won't start due to the file located in C:\Windows\System32\Config\Setup being corrupted. Goodie goodie. Looks like a Windows reinstallation for me.

we have a dedicated mainframe computer in our basement..

On the programming that its on it runs like a computer (only super fast and almost infinite hd space)

We have nuked ourselves and contained the breach to a minimum amount of data files.

since we have stopped the virus what do we do next?

I don't really know much about those thar viruses and how to stop them (outside of a virus scanning program).

Anyway, I finally got everything working after a full reinstall of Windows (dead system file) and an install of a very specific BIOS patch that cures only the Audigy problem on only the Dell Dimension 4300. I should have looked on Dell's site before e-mailing Creative tech support those 5 times...

It depends on the virus. However, there are several steps to take.

First off, start up in safe mode. This will keep a bunch of programs from launching. You will also need to edit your registry to make sure that the program doesn't execute when you boot up.

You also need to make sure that you have a clean virus protection software. Some of the viruses are specifically designed to attack the virus software, so you may need to do a clean install. You will also want to check the web to make sure you have any recent updates.

Running the virus software should locate any corrupt files. It may be able to clean them, but you may have to delete them.

I'm not going to contribute anything useful to this thread except for this: I own a Mac and therefore I don't have to worry about any of this. :p :p :p :p

(- Steve -)
PS: The first time I tried to post this, I had many many more of the guy sticking his tongue out, but I got an error message saying that I had too many images in my post.

Well you can't upgrade your system nearly as much as a PC user can, and most games are designed for PCs. Some games don't even have Mac compatibility, so...

:p :p :p :p

Oh, yeah, and Nightstalkers, if you would restate your problem in a less Nightstalkerish fashion, we could probably help you out more. ;)
