Got the problem under control.

Try to kill a program that attaches itself to all of your program files!

and we have a virus sweeping program but it is still unregistered and we owe the company around $50 for the last patch

I'll add to EB's statement a bit...

Just in case your Virus scanning program can't clean or delete the virus - it may put it in quarantine... If this is the case - do not access the file at all... if your system gets updates periodically - it will rid the system of the virus as soon as it receives the correct patch...
