Casual But Serious Type 1 Deck

Hey there everybody. I am currently trying to build a casual/competitive type one deck and i'd like a little feedback/advice. I've been reading online magic articles for a long time and have seen a large variety of Type 1 net/tournament decks. I'd like to try to avoid going that route as much as possible, although this deck uses many of the cards that drive those decks. I've paid particular attention to the articles written by Oscar Tan and J.P. Meyer. I like Oscars ideas about magic theory and efficency, and i like J.P.'s unorthodox deck choices (in reference to Invincible Counter Troll). Anyway, this deck is more or less a reflection of what i've learned playing over the years, with some inclusion of some expert insight.

Decklist:

4 Polluted Delta (don't have yet, but getting)

3 Impulse/Brainstorm

The Kill
-------------------------
4 Phyrexian Negator

(No Sideboard Currently)

Lame Deck Synopsis:
You may already have closed your browser windows by now, wondering why somebody would post such a horrible thing. Odd card choices and whatnot. Allow me to explain.

Phyrexian Negator
---------------------------
This is probably the sore thumb of the deck. The reasoning for playing them is simply this: I LIKE THEM. They're big, they're quick, they're scary. With the help of the deck's disruption, they beat the hell out of combo. They run over weenies. They're easy to cast. The drawback can be used to your advantage when you combo it with Balance. That really annoys people.

Timetwister
----------------
Usually used in combo decks, I like it becasue it's a relatively cheap draw 7. And I usually wait to cast it late game when I can easily Mindtwist/Balance away the opponents freshly drawn hand. Plus if I don't want to use it, it's a pitch to Force Of Will and a way to recover from the Disk. (note that the opponent may recover too, but what's a game without risk?)

4 Dark Ritual
---------------------------
Fast Negators. Multiple Duresss. 2nd Turn Bargains. Fast Disks. Extra Mana before Timetwister

Nevyrnall's Disk
---------------------------
I really really like J.P. Meyers ICT deck. The thing i like about it most is the sheer old-schoolness of it. This was one of the first cards I ever opened and it has been a favorite for a long time. It's not the quickest or most efficient way to wipe the board, but when it's there, it keeps people from playing things.

Zuran Orb
---------------------
Probably should be sideboard. But it's not. Not yet anyway.

Impulse
--------------------
Currently i have no fetch lands. I'm a cheap, poor bastard that got all of his cards 50 years ago (if you're wondering why i have a little power). In my opinion, this is the next best thing next to brainstorm. Actually I like these a little better, since you get to peek at an additional card and reshuffle.

Mishra's Factory
--------------------
I like this guy because he's an additional creature/manasource. Plus he hides from the disk.

Yawgmoth's Bargain/Will
------------------------------
They win games.

The way the deck plays is pretty simple. Duress potent spells, counter scary stuff, draw cards, drop a disk, blow up the world, then smash their face in.

The deck basically relies on a Disk or balance to punch a hole in the opponents gameplan. After one of which resolves, a Negator should quickly end things for them.

Please keep in mind the following if you bother to make any suggestions for this crap:

1. I hate Psychatog. It's a lame way to die.

2. I hate Psychatog.

3. I don't want to buy a Morphling. And I hate Psychatog.

Thanks for reading this!

Just so you know, neither Skeletal Scrying or Zuran Orb aren't restricted in Type 1.

You have some interesting (and somewhat strange) choices in here. I'm no Type 1 competitive expert, so I'm just merely going to make some observations. If you choose to take them as suggestions then cool :D

Force of Will - as the deck currently stands, you've got only 11 other blue spells in here, 4 of which (Accumulated Knowledge) you definitely don't want to pitch, and the 7 of the rest you'd usually prefer to hold onto.

Skeletal Scrying - You can't really play this and Yawgmoth's Will in the same deck. Well you can, but they will step on each other's toes fairly often in such a fast control deck.

Timetwister - There are 2 specific times that you want to play Timetwister: its first and main use is when you want to draw into the rest of a game-winning combo. The 2nd use is when you know you'll be able to generate substantial card advantage vs. your opponent

Damn, gotta run...I'll come back for more. Sorry

Timetwister - Without playing this deck and seeing your typical competition, I can't say this is going to generate CA all the time. Vs. typical power-Type 1 decks, you'll usually be doing them a great favor by refilling their hands. But against slower, more casual decks you should be gaining a strong advantage.

Phyrexian Negator - Very powerful, yet very dangerous. Also susceptible to just about every competitive T1 form of creature removal. He's a fine creature to run, but You should also consider having sideboard option replacements, like maybe Rainbow Efreet? Played correctly, Efreets are near invulnerable - and they too hide from Disks. But they do suck up your mana.

Wasteland/Strip Mine - They have to be in here.

Have you built/played this yet vs. real competition? What do you see as the weak points? From here its a little tough to pinpoint, as every card in your deck is strong, yet at the same time I have some trouble seeing them being fully cohesive. That said, a lot of times with decks like this the overall power of the cards come through and carry you repeatedly - so I'm curious to see if this is happening.

To be honest, i've only played it a few times. I don't have any place to play, really. Or any body to play for that matter. I just moved and I haven't really found a playgroup/store. The few times I did get to play it were against a random enchantress deck and a goblin charbelcher combo deck (the belcher deck was extended). So, I haven't seen any mountains....yeah...they'll probably kill me. But that's what sideboards are for.

Anyway, I did fairly wll. Supprisingly I beat the charbelcher deck every game, despite the fact that they were able to get one into play and use it. The enchantress deck won a few times (stupid words of wind), but overall things were pretty even.

Mikeymike, your right about the cards carrying me throught the game, more or less. Powerful cards do win games. I am aware that this isn't the most successful/cohesive deck available. I just want to make something farily decent, without looking too much like every other deck on the web.

I'd look at meddling mages, and a vampiric tutor...

Maybe even Quash - for when you have th emana to play it...

as for stopping the creature abilities, such as charbelcher... Cursed Totem is nice to throw out there...

It even stops elf-mana abilities...

Anything a creature can do that has a cost - is null and void!...
(tiggered abilities still occur)

Impulse doesn't reshuffle your deck. It was a mistake, they meant for you to just put the cards on the bottom of your library, and it has since been errataed to say so.

Also, I think the negators are fine, but they are a poor choice as your ONLY creature. The negator itself does nothing to keep itself from dying, which means that by itself its a liability. You just need something else on to of the negators is what I'm saying.

I thought with impulse, you choose one, set the other cards aside, shuffle, and then put them on the bottom?

The wording on impulse made no sense once WoTC realized what happens if you follow the text... so it's been changed...;)

Well, i've made some deck changes. Unfortunately I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet.
I figured if I was going to pull the negators, I should pull most of the black as well.

-4 Negator
-4 Duress
-4 Dark Ritual
-1 Timetwister
-1 Zuran Orb
-1 Yawgmoth's Bargain

+2 Mishra's Factory
+3 Counterspell
+3 Standstill
+2 Blinding Angel
+1 Braingeyser
+1 Absorb (I'm short 1 Force of Will)

So, now I have 3 slots left open. Any suggestions?

Put 4 Psychatog in here!!!!!

*ducks*

Seriously, though. Consider Dissipate for Force of Will - it's a 3-mana hard counter with benefits.
