Okay, turns out you DO have one... oops. Hmm... what else is there? What reasons could there be that they DO get through?

It doesn't change, I noticed that... maybe make it so that it shuffles between random codes? I don't know...
I already mentioned it, you *can't* stop real live people from using the code and registering and then posting. There's no way to differentiate a person's intentions of being a spammer or an actual interested Magic user when they register and use the code.

I know. Do you think that all the pornspammers are actual people? I really don't know what to do here....

In any case, I PM'd Ed about this thread. I'll drop the 'fix the porn issue' for now, but the autocarding and mana symbols would be nice anyways. :)

Oh no, it's obvious who the spammers are once they post. And frankly, from their membernames when I look at the member list (although you never can be too sure, since the name "turgy22" is a bit like theirs.
Oh crap! You caught me. I'm actually a spammer. I've just been biding my time, waiting for IMG tags to be enabled so that I can post inappropriate pictures.

I think they are, as the number of them who actually post is a small fraction of the number of new registrations that come in every day (probably like 1 spammer-post for every 5 who register)

EDIT 'cause turgy22 posted: I hope you're not offended :) I just used your alias as an example because it has numbers in it, a bit like what the crap registrations have (well, that, weird names to begin with, upper and lower case mixed together, etc). Yours was the closest example of how you CAN'T make a judgement of who's a spammer and who's not based solely on the name.

One way to combat spambots is to disallow first day posting... sure it can frustrate a legit newbie... but spambots aren't usually going to wait a day to post I wouldn't think...

Using a squiggly image of a word also stops spambots if they have to type it when registering.

I have to say, we don't get "that" much spam and it's easy to detect.

Card Tags - requested them a long time ago... The "best" way I'd like to see them is [card]Call of the Herd[/card] But, most people here actually aren't using the links as much... I sort of prefer the method of posting in color w/ rules text better - though it takes more time. (I actually use an excel spreadsheet which gives me the post to copy/paste)

Mana Symbol smileys - unnecessary... but I wouldn't mind them...
img tags - too easilly abuseable to be of use.

But [card] tags would be perfect. Really, it gets very annoying to have to write out the effect of everything in mindmaster.

I actually prefer writing everything out because then I can see at a glance what the board looks like, rather than clicking on links and/or looking up cards and having to remember what it is. There have been several times where I forget what a card does between clicking the links and messing up my game/turn because of it...

Ban on same day posting will prevent some, but not all, as there have been spammers who have posted on the day after they register...

I agree with Spidey on the card thing, I often struggle with the lesser known commons from "ancient" expansions.

Banning bots automatically is almost impossible. You could try to review all user accounts first before allowing them to post. Then again, you don't want to make the threshold for new users too high.

When was the last time a regular poster joined here? My guess is february. No offense, but I don't really see that issue. Or, you could put a timer on it, like Gleemax does. You have to wait for about 24 Hours before they send you the email.

I actually have no idea when a legit poster joined here, because they don't always post. They could lurk and then just quit coming.

Again, overall, the spam isn't overwhelming, maybe 4-5 a day and they're usually dealt with quickly.

Spidey does a great job in cleaning up the spam..... It would be nice if there was a way to turn off links for everyone but validated posters..... whatever that is..... but, make it harder to post links for new users.....

The only reason I commented on Spam was the requeest by BPC for ideas...

Spidey does an excellent job w/ spam reduction...

No matter what you do, people will find ways around it. The best thing we can do to fight spam is ignore it... if no-one clicked the links or bought the products spammed via email... spam would be a much smaller problem in general...

I am suggesting to make the ability to post links a little harder..... maybe you have to post X amount of times before earning the right to post links... that should keep the spammer away or at least to a small amount and it shouldn't deprive the newbies from posting/lurking here.

I'll check into it. There's also the spammer who just posts with no links, like one this morning that just said "Great thread!". But yeah, no links would cut down on a majority OR they just post the url anyway and don't care whether it actively links to the site.

I highly doubt the spambots care whether a link works or not... they don't seem to care that no-one clicks them either... :) OR that Ransac hates them.
