You didn't misinterpret the cards but you misinterpreted the rules regarding the cards. Each replacement ability only occurs once for each effect, so if you start with the Maniac and loop around it'll end at the Maniac. Rule 419.6a.

Why would your opponent be holding cards when you have a lot of discard, especially the Hippies and Rats to a lesser extent? Because of the bounce? I think your opponent won't have much on the table by the time you get around to bouncing stuff, probably not enough to get the Vises to work...

Can you explain yourself a bit better? To me, buyback you get the whole spell back (in effect an infinite number of copies of the spell), while kicker gives you just an added bonus (but still just can have 4 copies of the spell). That's a pretty big difference to me...
