I think the point is to make Type II discard deck. Sure you can use cards from Type 1 like Hymns. You can also use cards like Demonic Tutor and Hippies. In other words, the card pool is VASTLY increased as opposed to the Type II card pool, so of course there are more, perhaps powerful, cards...

When it comes to high-stakes tourneys like States with something to win on the line, the best deck might not necessarily be the "funnest". Sure, you may have fun but if you lose and expect to lose, why bother entering such a tourney in the first place? That's what friends and local tourneys...

Landkiller: I don't think he's THAT bad, and certainly not one of the worst cards to see print. Despite being restricted to black mana, just 1 is good for +1/+1. There are worse pumpables out there... I think the Duelist did a comparison a long time ago on them. I believe the best was Carrion...
