You're right, I don't remember that at all. Was it in response to the African Embassy bombings or something? Although if it was just bombings, it's a bit different than a full mobilization for invasion and occupying/overthrowing.

I also seriously doubt that all or the majority of the gold is in one central place. It's probably scattered among the various groups and cells spread out in the world.

I don't think a lot of people are forced to buy music or attend sports games or buy tobacco/alcohol or get a new car every year (especially since they're $10,000+). Software/Hardware I can see, but the problem is that everything costs money and alot of this stuff is "extraneous" to living...
