Actually, I'd say the main staple is getting power <2 creatures (which is pretty much most of them) through unblocked ala Warrior and Nomad. Mountainwalk hasn't really been included since Ice Age block or Mirage block.

Actually, don't let other fantasy settings prejudice your thinking in Magic's. There's no reason why a dwarf in Dominaria (or wherever) would kill himself rather than be enslaved. There have actually been some good dwarfs before Onslaught (Bomb Squad, Driller, etc); I guess they're on hiatus...
