Honestly, I think the books are that good. Aside from the fact that they appeal to youngsters because they can identify with the protagonists, the books just have a lot of good stuff: good characters, magic, intrigue, mystery, and the unexpected.

Well, as train has shown with his Sneak uses, a Crater Hellion that clears the board (usually) is probably better than a Man O War that only bounces a creature. I'm thinking there were cool creatures in US that were better than the CIP creatures of Visions.

Heck, I remember people saying they were quitting when Ice Age was rotating out and Standard/Type II tourney-format was created :) Don't remember that, but the 6th rules is apparently what started the impetus for creation of the CPA :)
