Energy counters go on players and can be spent to use abilities on certain cards. Food is an artifact token that has the ability "2, T, sac ~: gain 3 life." So Food is a lot more like the "Clue" tokens from Shadows Over Innistrad than it is like the Energy counters from Kaladesh.
