Just keep in mind that any set from Invasion to Fifth Dawn is going to me largely unsophisticated, with tons of cards focusing on the same particular thing (depending on the block). However, as far as brokenness goes, Mirrodin block is certainly the best place to look since Urza's block.

Yes, but you are excluding the bad cards in the original set and only applying "boundary" to the very best cards. It makes perfect sense that the cards which were found to be too good when the game was new are not being improved upon. The ones that sucked or were merely mediocre, you choose not...

Volcanic Hammer is pretty bad. I'd stay away from it when possible. It shouldn't be difficult to get some burn cards that are better (Incinerate comes to mind, but even Shock might be better than Volcanic Hammer).

I first thought of Spellbane Centaur too. There are not a lot of untargeted blue spells that deal damage to creatures. I can't think of any right now...
