I still contend that one cannot put cheese on a hamburger, as it becomes a cheeseburger at that point.

Yeah, usually my burger already has meat in it, so no need to put more on top.

I've had ham on a burger, it's good... I've put pastrami on a burger, it's also very good. (you cook it first and put it on after - with cheese or without. Swiss is best for both imho.
