I shall be running the game this time. I intend to have 2 Wolves, 1 Seer, and 1 Doctor. The Doctor shall select one person to watch each night and if that person is selected by the wolves to be killed, the doctor will be able to save that person. The doctor must select a different person each night, in order to avoid certain game imbalances and I'm thinking that for game and flavor reasons the doctor will not be able to choose himself. If anybody has further comments or suggestions, please put them here as well as signing up. We'll see how many sign up, and I figure we'll start the actual game the week after next.

The idea of a Doctor sounds interesting. I'm game.

I'm assuming that his workings are completely secret so neither the wolves nor the players know who he is or who he has already protected. I have a couple of questions.

Can he just not protect the same person two nights in a row, or does he need to protect everyone before he can protect someone he's already protected before?

If he protects, do the villagers get to know who was protected or just that someone was? Do the wolves see who's doing the protecting? Does the person who was protected know?

The doctor's identity would be secret, just like the other identities. Additionally, I think that for flavor purposes, the person will be referred to as the Healer instead. My thought process was that it couldn't be the same person on consecutive nights, otherwise it might get too complicated. The way I have played in the past is that the doctor's watching over someone doesn't reveal anything to anyone. The only information that comes out is if the doctor chooses to protect the same person the wolves kill. Then everyone will know that the person was attacked but was saved by a mysterious individual. I'm still working out all the flavor details.

I picked a game at Origins, Lupus In Tabula, It's basically the werewolf game with some changes. They suggest for 8 players that there are 2 wolves and 1 seer.

1. The werewolf is not revealed when the villagers hang him.
2. The wolves win if there is a tie of wolves to villagers
3. Each day votes are cast and the top two vote getters are "nominated", then a second vote is taken with voting only for these two nominees.
4. Lots of special characters to be added if there are more than 8 players:
Medium- This player can talk to the dead. In the night he will learn if the last lynched player was a wolf.
Possessed - Is a villager that sides withthe wolves without knowing who they are and wins when the wolves win.
Bodygaurd - A villager who protects a player of his choice. Each night he picks a player and if the wolves choose that player to as a victim, the protected player is not killed and no one dies that night.
Freemasons - are two villagers who know each other are not wolves.
Werehampster - This player plays on his own and can not be killed by the wolves, but if he is choosen by the seer, he dies. If the werehampsteris alive at the end of the game, he is the only winner.
Mythomaniac - This player takes on the role of the player he picks on the second night (first night the wolves feed). Thus, if he picks the seer, there are 2 seers in the game, if he picks a wolf, he stays a wolf the rest og the game.
Ghost variant - The Ghosts vote after the nominees are chosen.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure that that ratio is okay when you are playing IRL ;)

In my experience, there is enough time to form opinions and at some point, the mediator announces a vote and starts polling everyone. Some games might be more strict with a specific time frame I suppose, but the games I played in were fairly casual and the mediator just at some point determined that enough opinions were set that it was time to vote.

In the games I have played at Origins and GenCon, the hangee has to get a majority of votes. They have not hung someone if there isn't a majority.
I like the idea that if there isn't a majority, then the top vote getters go in to a run off where everyone has to vote, then the ghost council could get a vote in that one.
