Weird Al sends a finger to Atlantic Records

Someone had already showed me this song a while ago. I didn't even know it was on his new album...

It would've been, but the record company of the guy parodied lobbied against it.

The guy himself, though, found it to be great and wanted it released.

Al released it in MP3 for free, screwing himself the lyrical royalties of the song, and the guy whose song it is mechanical royalties for the music.

So he not only screws the record company, he screwed the guy who wrote the song in the first place? Thumbs down to you, Al.

There's mechanical royalties for the music? I thought it was a "one-time" fee, paid when Weird Al asked permission to parody the song?

Nope. Each sale, after the album 'pays back' what it cost the record company, produces a royalty.

No, no no! The record company didn't want it out. Al and the guy who wrote the song WANTED it to get out.

They decided to put it out free, and make the record company mad.

Atlantic Records just didn't want it put out. Al asks permission from the artists before parodying, but decided to play their politics... and give 'em a finger while he was doing it.
