Hey, I'm looking at the Panasonic DMR-ES35V, should I be concerned about it not having a digital tuner? Or since I have cable (and will most likely have it by 2009), I don't need to worry about it?

For channels 1- 78 it's good to go as is because those should still be analog. For above that you do need to connect it between a cable box and tv using the box as the tuner. I've got digital cable with a box setup and can view or record any channel I'm paying for through this unit.

With reguard to the "old" vcr subtopic, if you have a working vcr pre 2000 they aren't effected by copyright protection. So if you were unethical not that I would (please stop laughing really) you could rent the newest movies and put them on vhs with one. Of course they don't strip off the protection it just dosn't effect them, so if you took your copy and tried to copy it to dvd the embedded protection would still kick in. If one was so unscrupulous as to want to just be able to copy anything protected, not that I would do that (just stop laughing now I really wouldn't do that) you would have to go to
xdimax.com and order red dvd pro or grex. But I must stress I would never do that, I just heard about a guy that knows a guy who's friend was an extra in who framed rodger rabbit who said you could copy 99% of copyrighted stuff using thier products.

Oh and spiderman if you'r ok with factory refurbished 90 day guarantee you could go to amazon.com and pick one up for about half price.

Well, I meant in the future when all signals go digital in 2009, as this box will probably be the last I buy for a while (I don't think I need a Blu-Ray/HD player, although I guess that could change :) ). But if I have cable for all of my channels, they should be digital by that time and convert the signals anyway, right? 'Cause I don't see us giving up cable anytime soon either.

In other words, though I'll watch movies on it and all, it's main purpose for now is to copy my VHS tapes - it's not meant to be a tuner for the TV since I have cable.

I'm not sure what "factory refurbished" is - does that mean it's a return or something? I'll probably just go with a new unit.

What is factory refurbished?
# Anytime a retail store or consumer opens a product box and it is not purchased, the retailer cannot sell it as new and often ships it back to the manufacturer

# If a consumer decides they do not wish to keep a product for any reason, even if it is the next day, it is sent back to the manufacturer

# Once at the manufacturer, the entire item is completely gone through to assure it meets ALL factory specifications and is quality checked again

# Factory Refurbished goods have a very low 2% return rate because they have been checked at least twice for original quality

# Each product includes a warranty that is supplied by the manufacturer that matches or even exceeds the original warranty
