There will be a significant change to the Extended tournament format when Onslaught rotates into play in the fall. Standard has a rotation every 3 sets. Similarly, Extended will have a rotation every 3 blocks. While Standard fluctuates between 4 and 6 sets, Extended will fluctuate between 6 and 8 blocks.

At the initial implementation of this pattern, the legal blocks will be: Onslaught, Odyssey, Invasion, Mercadian Masques, Urza's Saga, and Tempest. Base set editions are counted as being part of the block during which they were released. This means that 6th Edition and 7th Edition will be included in the new Extended format.

As a result, this means that dual lands will be rotating out of Extended on November 1st, 2002, along with the Ice Age block (including Alliances and Homelands), Mirage Block (including Visions and Weatherlight), and 5th edition. In 2005 the Tempest, Urza's Saga, and Mercadian Masques blocks, as well as 6th Edition, will be rotating out.

We believe this new Extended Format rotation policy will result in a healthy and challenging play environment with a greatly reduced need for card banning.

And I just paid out my favorite orifice for a forth Force...at least I can pick up my duals even cheaper than I already have been.

Discuss.

*Gerode hopes demand for FoW is low enough for him to pick up a few copies

EDIT: ...and duals, too.

Everybody, take out your tinkers, that deck's gonna tap-dance on your extended behinds....

That and Oath.

I for one think this is a good thing. What they need to do now is have a type 1 or type 1.5 Grand Prix. That way those cards will still see some use but won't be as chased after as they are now.

Thawing Glaciers is gone too. The Duals will be the most missed cards. A lot of Extended decks won't work as wel if they had to replace every Dual with painlands. Those 10-land decks will short circuit.

This sounds good, as the only discernible effect (and a good one it is) it will have for me will be to drive down prices on older good cards (as Gerode said).
On general principle I agree with rkoelsch that they should focus more attention on 1.5 now than they did before, but tournament rules shouldn't affect my play much.

Finally, the burden of having to keep up with attaing the good "Old Cards" like Force of Will and Dual Lands is over!

Dual Lands- $6 at the PR, in playable condition.

The fact that I paid that price for a Necro two years ago that was priced at $1 at the same booth - Priceless.

Falling prices are always a GOOD thing for a casual player like me. Right now, duals are worth the equivalent of about $6-8. Come September-October, that price should be dropping. I'll also be able to complete my set of Forces. (I've been using 3 for as long as I can remember.)

That means that one day I can look forward to getting a second Morphling. ;)

Great for players, bad for collectors. Unless they throw more attention to 1.5

Makes me glad I already sold my collection because it was full of things that are going to plunge, like duals and FoW's.

If I still played Magic, I would be stomping my feet in useless anger and yelling "Should I wipe my arse with my hard-earned FoW's and dual lands, cause seems now they're worth just the same as toilet paper!!"

Rotate THIS, Wizards!!

<insert picture of me doing the aforementioned wiping>

Oh well.

They're just as good for occasional multiplayer games that I still participate in from time to time.

But a rotation like this was going to happen eventually, and in truth it SHOULD have happened two and a half years ago. The clever traders have been quietly getting rid of their duals since around February when word broke that duals would be rotated.

As I had no duals to begin with, it doesnt really affect me at all except that I now really look forwards to extended format competition.

Well, if I ever had contact with people who cared about this, I might have been able to make out and get more duals for cheap (if they do go down), but since I don't, this doesn't really affect me. Unless YOU guys are getting rid of them... :)
