I remember reading somewhere that up to the first 6 moves of chess had actually been determined, and it was astronomical - I just went 2 moves further in case there was a bigger math person I that could figure this out...

As for the magic deck question - it's a combination problem, though not an easy one...

...Math is my thing so I'll give the chess thing a shot

The first move only eight pieces can move and also the two knights,

8x?

Second Move the same eight plus another eight, because any pawn could have been moved

8x16x?

same with turns 3,4,5,6,7,and 8 so...

10x16x16x16x16x16x16x16.......lemme whip out the old calulator,.......and the grand total is.....2,684,354,560 moves give or take a thousand or two, lol

of coarse, this takes alittle knowledge about chess and and good understanding of mathematics.

Okay the first move is a possible 10,

the second is your opponent's move which is another 10,

then yours again, you still have the 10 if you moved a knight first, while this also opens a move for the rook and closing it for the pawn now blocked... but if it was a pawn you'd have, 8 pawns, 2 knights and another "freed" piece... but if you moved the pawn in front of the king you have 2 pieces, the queen and bishop that can move, so you have a possible 12 moves total... unless the knight blocks the bishop and queen...

same for the opponent...

after that it gets extremely wild...

That's why 6 was so hard to determine... Going with the 1st 8 moves... if you got your knight and bishop out you could castle on the 4th turn adding to the combination...

The first move is a possible 20. (eight pawns * two moves each + 2 knights * two moves each)
So it's a lot more than that.

There we go again, adding more to such a complex situation... So there's a possible 24 moves the first turn for each player...

Then if pawns d2/e2 were moved this opens up a possibility of 3 moves for each knight... and if the pawns on a2/h2 were move this opens up a move for the castles but stops the knight's second available move...

This is so horrible for my Coat-Fried brain to comprehend, and we're only on White's second move - 3rd overall...
