These are the commonest player archetypes I've noticed. For brevity's sake, I've coded them with Yu-gi-oh characters who share the traits of these gamer types.
Yugi, the Roleplayer- This player uses gaming as an exercise in imagination.
For Yugi, plot and storyline matter most importantly, regardless of whatever else. Yugi will usually ham it up and make some funny backstory based on what is happening in game.
(Ex: Bird deck v. Elf deck -> Aven Assault on Wirewood, live on ENN: The Voice of the Woods.)
The problem with Yugi is that he will usually get very annoying over time.
Kaiba, the Strategist- This player is goal-oriented and focused on the basic aspect of winning the game. Playtesting and practice are taken seriously in the eyes of Kaiba, and sometimes he'll teach the game to others who want to learn. Kaiba is usually seen in the Pro Tours, and sometimes, he can really be an irritating spoilsport if things go wrong for him.
Rebecca, the Go-Getter- The most casual of the four archetypes, Rebecca will do it just for the love of the game. Rebecca is known as a 'scrub' or as *Ley Line* by some Kaibas. Rebecca can be found almost anywhere, and treats MtG much like Poker or Crazy 8s with a broader cardpool. She'll even play some crap decks if they're 'fun' enough.
Pegasus, the Freak - The freaky, obnoxious *Mudhole* type that the Christian Coalition, CANA, etc. are so irritated about. Whenever you come across a 'Dangers of (insert game here)' story, an example of Pegasus is sure to follow. Clearly these people exist, because the religious groups that are convinced against specific fantasy games wouldn't really be willing to contradict their religion by lying about this type.
