I will be attending my first sanctioned Type I tournament this saturday. The following is what I could scrape together from my limited card pool.

Any sugestions or ideas for improvement are welcome, but know now that I have ZERO Cursed Scrolls, which typically is an auto-inclusion in any Pox deck. I also only have 2 Sinkhole, despite my 2 week search for another two. So, I had to make due. Sideboard ideas would be nice too...

Rando-Pox...also known as Poor Man's Pox.

Are those the only differences between a "regular" Pox deck, Cursed Scrolls and 2 more Sinkholes?

Well, I can't help at all, as I'm unfamiliar with the Pox deck. I guess none of the "new" cards from recent sets help it, huh?

What's the prize for the tournament?

The prize is a minty fresh Juzam Djinn.

(which is being pronounced Joo Zam Da-gin by most of the locals).

$10 entry fee.

SB ideas:

Defense Grid
Sanctimony/Warmth
Aura Fracture
Spinning Darkness
Perish

what about 1 or 2 copies of Vindicate main, Death Grasp is prolly not too good.

Vindicate might be a good idea. The reason for the Deathgrasp was for use against rather fast aggro decks, to gain life back so that I would not Pox myself to death trying to kill thier creatures.
Seeing that it would be the first card sided out, it's also first on the "cut" list.

But, Vindicate might make a good replacement for Sinkhole.

As far as mana costs go, I do not want anything that costs more the 3.

But, then again, if I add vindicate, I'm going to have to up the White Mana sources, perhaps by adding Tainted Field? But, yet again a but, dropping Swamps to add 1 or 2 Tanted Fields reduces the efectiveness of both the fields and the Lake of the Dead.

BUT...with out the death grasp, Lake of the dead would most likely be unneeded any way.

Hmmmm...

-4 Steel Golems

+4 Chemeric Idols

The idols don't work well with the factories, but it doesn't get wrathed away, either. It'll also give you another Spinning Dorkness target if needed. Having three on the board and winning in two turns is much better than facing another creature and not being able to pox due to killing your offense.

I also found that Abyssal Horrors work well, but that's a metagame call there.

Steel Golem is a better Spinning Drakness target than the Idol, and Wrath isn't really a factor, the same can't be said of Lightning Bolt.

He also doesn't play the best reason for Chimeric Idol, Nether Spirit, so I'd say the Golem is better in his deck.
But if many ppl play Oath or Wrath he could use the Idols.

Abyssal Horror???? the biggest ravenous Rats ever??? are you serious?? or did you mean another card?

Yeah, I thought about using Idols, but then I just figured they'd be Bolt and Incinirate bait.

I may put them in the sideboard for use against decks not sporting red.

I also thought about Nether Spirit, but I just think the un-boltable, un-Abyssable Steal Gollum is the man for the job.

Now...side board...

I expect a lot of aggro decks, because most people won't have the blue power to play Weisman or Keeper or such.

I also know a couple of the players will be coming to the tournament toting Timetwisters, Time Walks and Ancestrals.

But, I mostly expect Zoo varients. I also think one guy is going to be playing the original Three Duece just for kicks. (4 Savahna Lions, 4 Grazban Ogres, 4 Jackel Pup, blah blah blah...)

Type I kicks ass! It's a lot of fun to be able to play with the old stuff again.

I was wrong about it being sanctioned. It was double elimination, which is inferior to swiss, I think, and takes longer.

Here is the deck I used and sideboard...

3 Pox
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Duress
1 Mind Twist

3 Diabolic Edict
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Balance
4 Sinkhole
1 Vindicate

4 Steal Golum
4 The Rack

1 Demonic tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Yawgmoths Will

4 Dark Ritual
4 Mishra's Factory
1 Stripmine
4 Scrubland
2 Tainted Field
11 Swamp

Side
3 Dystopia
1 Edict
1 Pox
4 Spinning Darknes
2 Seal of Clensing
4 Masacre

I suck at reports, so I'll give no more then brief rundowns...

Round I, White Weenie
Game I...After I muligan to 5, he rushes me with quick shadow creatures. I never see a single edict, plow or pox, my creatures can't block, and I also never get a tutor. Sucks to be me.

Game II...It's a Massacre!

Game III...It's a Massacre!
(and all the guys laughed at me for putting Massacre in the side.)

1-0
***
Round II, Burn, Burn, Burn
Game I...He's land light, and I get the perfect draw. I beat him down with factories and Golums and he sits there with an empty hand and 1 mountain.

Game II...His only creature is avalanch riders. He casts 2 during that game and I spin both. While he's playing off the top of his deck, I kill him with the un-boltable Golum. It seemed he didn't play Fireblast.

2-0
***
Round III...Worst Weisman Ever

Game I...Duress, Hymn first turn...duress, sinkhole second. He taps out for morphling later, and I edict. The dummy.

Game II...Why do people play with Arcane Denial? I wanted him to counter my spells. He fills my hand while I rape his. the un-counterable factory goes the distance.

3-0
***
Round IV, Elves

Game I...I keep a stripmine, 1 swamp hand. I duress and see two creeping molds and an icestorm. Oops.

Game II...I pox and spin my way to victory, with the rack doing the final damage.

Game III...after a rather long game, I'm at 5 and he's at 7. He had just creeped my Golum and Icestormed my factory. He also has a horde of pissed off elves. I have 2 racks, 2 swamps and 1 scrubland in play, and 1 swamp in hand. I draw a demonic tutor, drop the swamp, tutor for and play ballance. Now his hand is empty, and he has no creatures. Two turns later I win thanks to The RAck.

4-0

Round V, Keeper

Game I...His first turn, drops land, lotus, two moxes, and a sol ring, and Mind Twists my hand for 6, leaving me with a vindicate.
He's next turn he Ancestrals, regrowths the Ancestral, timewalks, drops a morphling, and does about 6 other manuevers I can't even recall. I scoop.

Game II...I go first, and open with Ritual, Duress, Hymn. On my second turn I ritual and play duress, sinkhole. The gods loved me.

Game III...the gods hate me. In all truth, I was out-gunned and out matched. The guy played perfectly, and got to go first. Pox can beat keeper, but only, I'm convinced, if it goes first and gets the right draw.

4-1

Round VI, Red/Green land destruction.

Game I... First game he stone rains and icestorms like nine hundred times, and kills me with a kird ape after double bolting my gollum.

Game II...I empty his hand and lay two racks. He thinks playing Argothian Wurm, only to have me sack land after land, is good for him. He's wrong. He is ths incapable of drawing answers to my golum or the racks.

Game III...he lays the first turn vice. we each play creatures only to see them killed. After a very long and drawn out game, I'm at 5 and he's at 9. He top-decks a bolt. Next turn, he top-decks an Incinerate. Lucky bastard.

It was all very fun, and I think we have the store convinced to do it at least once a month. Time to save money for the jewelry.
