Spiderman: I follow the news extensively. I take part in a lot of discussions (or at least read the discussions) over at themanadrain.com, the center of the web's competetive Type 1 community. At any time, I'm vaguely aware the current top contenders in the metagame, their strategies (painted in broad strokes), their weaknesses, and some of the elementary interactions between the top contenders.

Do you know the general opinion of the Type 1 community over the restriction of Dark Ritual/Necro and if mono-black control can make a comeback without those cards? Is that archetype that important to make a comeback?

oops, sorry, I'm getting the Extended discussion mixed up with the Type 1 discussion. Forget Dark Ritual.

I did a quick search, Spiderman and the opinion seems to be that Necropotence needs to remain restricted. Two of the sharpest minds in the format: Steven Menendian and Phillip Stanton (Smmenen and Dr. Sylvan, respectively) think that Necropotence is one of the cards so broken that it should never be unrestricted. I tend to agree with that sentiment. A card that can be cast first turn off of a Dark Ritual and which immediately draws you 15+ cards is excessively strong. Even though you have to draw them at the end of your turn, for a deck like Worldgorger Dragon (example), discarding 13+ cards isn't a big deal, if it means that barring a really great play from one's opponent, one wins the following turn. Although Necropotence would help mono-black control, it must remain restricted, since it helps combo at least as much, if not more. Historically, that has been the purpose of restriction: keeping combo in check so that control can actually be fast enough to beat it.

Thanks for doing the search.

So is mono-black control hosed in Type 1 or are there second tier decks or does no one care about that archetype right now?

Just my perspective on the monoblack thing, but I think that with things the way they are, monoblack is not worth it, because of how artifact-heavy the environment is. Black has no way of dealing with that...

Even if your wishlist of cards was unrestricted? You seemed to be the proponent of monoblack...

what about Null Rod?

all black needs to do is rit out the matrix, or null rod... that's not too much to ask...

After that - hand disruption would kill off the opponent...

On Necro, it's not as broken as MOST people think. It's still broken in half, but the not getting the cards until end of turn severely limits the card. Bargain, now that thing is just absurd...

Still, Necro won't be unrestricted. It scares people more than most anything else on the list, partially because they've been on the receiving end of it, unlike other cards that are actually more broken...
