Maybe I should submit this to speed up the process... ;)

"You may have this creature deal lethal damage to blockers and remaining damage to defending player. Total damage dealt will equal its power."

Nevermind the maybe - I submitted it...

yeah - I was just showing reminder text...

That should fit in their block, and allow for the word trample...;)

No, they said they're LOOKING at it. Not that it's going to happen.

True, it could be in 10th ;)

But "looking" and "might" are just standard disclaimers to not get the reader's hopes up. It still could happen but they don't want to be held to that so no definites.

No, my glass is filled with 50% water, 50% air.

I'm neither optimistic nor pessmistic. Would I like to see trample back? Yes. Do I think there's a chance of its return? Yes. Is it coming back in 9th Edition?

Maybe.

The real question is...

...what Tramplers would they introduce?

Uncommon Hill Giants (definatly wouldn't be commons in the base set with Trample, obviously) arn't exactly exciting for a beginner...

The problems with trample don't arise when there's no combat tricks going on. It has problems otherwise, though. What happens if the blocking creature has an applicable protection ability? What if a damage-prevention effect is used on the blocking creature? What if the blocking creature has a damage redirection effect (like the En-Cor).

You might be able to get away with reminder text like this:
You may assign excess combat damage from this creature to defending player. Excess combat damage is any damage above the total toughness of all creatures blocking this creature.

Those questions come up whether the attacker has trample or not. They really have nothing to do with trample as it is.

Trample doesn't seem complex at all to me. But it might be different now, for all I know...

I haven't been updated as to what trample is since Urza's Saga...

The "major" change done to trample (which I don't remember when, so you might know it), is the requirement to assign lethal damage to the blocking creature(s). Before, a pro-color blocker could "soak up" all the damage and prevent the trample; now, you assign lethal damage to the pro-color blocker (which is then prevented) but any left over hits the defending player.

That's basically it.

Yeah, knew that one. I think it was that way in 5th edition, but it might have been a change from later. It was that way by the time they "simplified" it in Saga though...

Here train, I tried to clean up your submission. Maybe we here at the CPA can band together and come up with good reminder text.

Yeah, Istanbul was right that it is only a consideration. Note, however, that finding a good reminder text is a huge plus in getting Trample to come back in 9E. That said, we should really help out with the reminder text.

Here's my shot based on train's idea:

"You must have this creature deal lethal damage, if possible, to all blockers, even if that damage would be prevented. Remaining damage may be dealt to defending player."
