Touraments, Prizes and Links

Reading turgy22's "Going to Hell" article and how the events were run and prizes given out, I was wondering:

How are the pre-release's run where you went and how are prizes awarded? Mostly just the flights, but what about drafts?
Also, Is there a link to the people who run said pre-releases?

Mooseman,

Here's a link to the events and prize structure at the prerelease I went to:
http://www.graymatterconventions.com/guildpact/pa.html
The site doesn't mention it, but if you sign up for two flights in the very beginning, it's only $50 and you'll receive the minimum of 3 booster packs in consolation prizes.

I've only gone to prereleases run by Gray Matter Conventions, but I hear they're pretty loosely run overall compared to other areas. For example, they don't make you register your cards or decklist and there's no paper that both players have to sign for match results.

I think WOTC has a pre-release page that subsequently lists who's holding pre-releases in different areas, so you click on whoever you're interested and most likely you'll go to that organizer's home page...

So for the 32 player flights, what were the additional prizes for 3 or 4 wins?
The web site doesn't actually say.

The one that I help at is: PES

No reg or result slips? hmmmmmmm........
We do deck reg, deck swap, and result slips........

What do the rest of you think about the different approaches to pre-releases?

I haven't really thought about it, but I think since it's up to the organizer to run it however they want, they should be able to run it however they want. I mean, I'm not sure what the value is to have "standardized" pre-releases, in terms of prizes and flights and whatnot, if that's what you're getting at...

The prizes in Europe are smaller I heard.

Winner who went 6-0 gets 7 packs.

I went 3-3 with Guildpact last sunday and got 1 pack for it. When I opened my cards I already knew that I wouldn't finish high. My build could have been better, however...

Not at all...... Just wondered what everyone thought.
Since I have never been to an event run by another organizer, I don't really know what else is going on out there.

Looking for opinions and that should be easy at the CPA.....

Do players like a big main event or the smaller flights?
Or are the drafts the thing to do?

When I've gone to pre-releases, I usually do the flights, just because they're shorter. I've never drafted.

When I was a frequent pre-release touney-type 'player' I always wanted to draft. A few times I would enter the main event otherwise I would wait,...and wait..... then, when "Flights" were introduced that made it so much easier, instead of dropping out of the main event to draft I just showed up an hour before the doors opened and got into the first or second flight. By the time they were over then it'd be "DRAFT_TIME".

The last pre-release I attended before starting to judge I played in several flights and didn't draft, wanna know why?

I love getting T-Packs and the land that comes with them :) Mooseman will vouch for me about my land fetish

The last 2 pre-releases i attended both had different prize structures.

I have no knowledge of behind the scenes at pre-release, but when we run release events we buy 'release packs' which are supposed to be enough to run a 32 man event, with prizes. But wizards have never said what they would like the prize structure to be, it is left up to us. We came up with the 'ladyboy' system to allocate prizes.

We give out fairly generous prizes, because we dont run it to make money. The venue i used to go to gave out no prizes (that is a bit unfair, he did give out the crappy t-shirts), since the store owner was in it for the cash. (he would also cheat, but that is off topic)

I suspect Wizards keep a tighter control of pre releases than release events, in the amount of prizes to be given out, but that the tournament organisers have a large say in how that pot is divided up.
