The card name of this popular creature from Ice Age is often mispronounced. The correct pronunciation is "Lure - Goif".


I've noticed most magic cards pronounced like a four year old would say supercalafragalisticexpialadotious, but thats besides the point.

What other .\\agic cards have you found people saying the name "wrongly"?

Most around here mis-pronounce Scourge... They say "Skirge"...

Is the base of the word not Scour...?... I end up saying Skorge... like gorge...

Here in South-Western Pennsylvania, it is our God given right to mispernounce and/or bludgeon words/phrases to death, ie

I don't know how many friggin' times my opponent would 'envelope' my sorcery at local tournaments. I wanted to say:,
"With or without postage?!?"

"Hey, what'r-U Stooopid an at?!?"

Man-ah vs. Mon-ah
Rishi-dan vs. Ri-shaah-den

I hate it when people pronounce Necropotence as "Necro-Potence", like it's two different words insead of the way it shouldbe pronounced "Nec-ra-po-tence", similer to Metropolis.

But the reason people mis-pronounce words to begin with is because they are semi-illiterate morons...just like most people.

For instance, I can not even envision another way to pronounce Lhurgoyf except the "correct" way you put it above. How the hell have you heard people say it?

Well considering that many of the words in Magic are made up, and that the English language is inherently flawed with loads of pronunciation contradictions, I don't know if this is the most fair thing to say.

"Mann's Goblin Raiders" is the only cringeworthy one... but then again, I say MON-ah for mana, and pronounce other things with a strong southern accent. I've had a bit of a tither about Paladin with a friend of mine from Massichussetts...

He says "PAl a' Deen," I say "Pa LAD in."

I also told him I had some cans of Salmon if he was hungry... and I said it "Sal Min." He said it "Sammin." I told him that I watched Fat Abbert when I was a kid... He then said "Albert."

Y'know, there's no pleasing those damned Yankees.

There's a guy around here who keeps saying "Muh-ROH-Din" instead of "MEER-uh-din". But that's no big deal: As people have mentioned, many of the words on cards are made up, and even WOTC has said that there is no official pronounciation for anything, (There's just the way that they happen to pronounce it).

No, the one that takes the cake was this guy we used to play with for about two months until we had to come to terms with the fact that he was both ignorant and annoying.

Ebony is not a made up word, by the way. And he wouldn't believe us when we told him he was saying it wrong. Which reminds me, he was ignorant, annoying, AND stubborn as hell, (Which was why he remained so ignorant. "In one ear and out the other" was never truer of another person.)

He also kept trying to get us to watch an anime series he called "Nor." Apparently that little film movement in the 1940's called film NOIR had never been explained ot him before, which made me wonder what sort of value he was getting out of that anime anyway. Gosh, if he was gonna mispronounce "Noir" he could have at least said "Noyr."

But I've already said too much...

If I was at any point required to say it, I probably would've said "Nor."

I'll have to be a semi-illiterate moron then, 'cause I know I mis-pronounce it... more to laziness though, I just "think" the "y" is an "r" and say "lure-gurf". I do that with a lot of cards...

especially when you don't know how they're supposed to be pronounced. And although sounding them out will technically get you the correct pronunciation more likely than not, there are enough exceptions in the language that you can't always rely on it...
