Thrull deck

Hey all. I thought it would be fun to try to build a thrull deck, exploiting cards like sadistic glee and soul exchange. I also added some backup..


4 Dark Ritual
4 Culling the Weak

4 Thrull Surgeon
4 Blood Pet
4 Basal Thrull

4 Sadistic Glee
4 Soul Exchange

3 Grave Pact
3 Delraich
3 Priest of Gix
3 Sengir Autocrat

20 Swamps

I have yet to test tortured existence or oversold cemetery.
One trick discarding multiple blood pets for more, popping them, etc.

Basically you can pop a lot of creatures.
things like this..

Play a swamp, pet
Play a swamp, Basal Thrull
Play a swamp, sac basal for BB, cast soul exchange on your pet, basal returns as a 4/4, cast sadistic glee on basal, 2 icc creatures or 1 2cc. use B for culling, etc,etc,etc..

I thought about using sick tricks like the above turn 3 move with the diabolic tutor fetching you hatred perhaps.. or cabal therapy or final punishment..

you can also do the superfun,

T1: Swamp, Rit, priest of gix, basal, blood pet, delraich
T2: Swamp, Sadistic glee on delraich, play and pop a pet to swing for 7..etc

I think the coolest part about this deck is that the creatures are too worthless to counter on their own, and any form of burn you can usually blow them up .

I think I should rebuild that deck someday...

Sadistic Glee is another old favorite of mine...

Wow, I really like that you're using cards that I used to always play.

Some cards I used to always try to build decks with:

Blood Pet
Basal Thrull
Sadistic Glee
Sengir Autocrat
Culling the Weak

Anyway, I'm sure that Oversold Cemetery is a nice new card for this type of deck. I used to always use Breeding Pit, which doesn't have quite the versatility of Oversold Cemetery.

It would be just so awesome if you could find a way to fit Ebon Praetor into this deck. Everybody hates being attacked by the ancient avatar of thrull-eating.

mm... i dunno how praetor would work out..
I guess if you played a autocrat, sac'd 1 with culling to cast him. then 2 of them the following 2 turns..
he would be a 5/5 FS trampler for 2 turns...
which if you didnt feel like feeding him your autocrat, hed be a 5/5, 5/5, 5/5, 3/3, 1/1, toast.
Providing you didnt pop a thrull..
I think the praetor would have to replace the 3 delraichs...
isn't that sad?

Ebon Praetor 4BB, 5/5, Trample, first strike
At upkeep, this gets a -2/-2 counter.
At upkeep, you may sacrifice a creature. If you do, remove a -2/-2 counter from this. If the sacrificed creature was a Thrull, this gets a +1/+0 counter.

he's actually not bad, if you ignore his casting cost.
I guess you only really have to sac thrulls when he can attack...
1 thrull for a 6/5...

I also thought about using armored thrull..
the 2B Thrull that when you T: sac, gives another creature +1/+2 permanently.. but the inability to pop him instantly hurts.

but it could give you a 6/7 soul exchange'd thrull for relatively little mana..

Breeding pit is kinda fun... even if its kinda bad...

speaking of bad...

Thrull Champion 4B, 2/2, All Thrulls get +1/+1.
T: Gain control of Thrull. You lose control of it when Thrull Champion leaves play or you lose control of Thrull Champion.

Blech...

ok then.. i think i'll build this.. with some other subsitutes in mind..

I'm also a huge fan of circling vultures.. but rotting giant is ass...
B for a 3/2 flier..
i could potentially do
T1: Swamp, pet, sac pet for vulture
T2: Swamp, Basal thrull, sac for BB cast thrull surgeon
T3: Swamp, Priest+ any other creature.

armored thrulls, ebon praetor, breeding pit
and maybe death pit offering...
Perhaps if i have a grave pact out, cull my last pet for it..
id need to run death pit with oversold...

I just like this deck cause its fun as hell.. lots of zone changes..
the kind of deck that would be fun against almost any deck..

To me it seems this is sort of like sligh.. but instead of a swarm.. you get collectively larger manabase. and could actually hard cast
delraich on turn 1, Swamp, ritual, priest of gix, using B for Culling, use all 6 for delraich.

I just need to test to see if i should be more aggro.. with single card kill strategies.. like hatred/ diabolic tutor, or if gradual beefiness is ok.

Delraich is definitely more practical than the slow Praetor.

They are both on the list of totally awesome big black creatures...

i know this would slow you down...but how can you not have breeding pit in a thrull deck?!!?!?

Pretty easily, apparently...

Breeding Pit gets better when you have things like Thrull Champion or Ebon Praetor/Lord of the Pit/Devouring Strossus/Minion of Leshrac/etc.

Other than that, it's not much help. Having some token blockers isn't amazing.

Well, they could also be used for Culling of the Weak

And they become more useful if Bad Moon was in the deck.

The advantage with Culling is not worth the upkeep though...

It would be somewhat good with Bad Moon, although still not all that fast...

Yeah, they're pretty much only good with the Ebon Praetor in a Thrull deck...

Unless you somehow work in a use for fodder in such a deck, like maybe Recurring Nightmare? Or is there a Thrull that acts like a Fallen Angel?

No, but you could use Fallen Angel...

I used to use Breeding Pit in a deck that had Ebon Praetor, Hecatomb, and Minion of Leshrac as well as numerous Thrulls and some Thrull Champions. The deck was called "Fun with Swamps" and it was really annoying in multiplayer if left alone too much...

Well, yeah, you could use Fallen Angel but I didn't know if that strayed away from the Thrull theme. I'm thinking that if you go the Fallen Angel route, you start going into the "lots of fodder for sac effects" theme

I don't mind using creatures other than thrulls.. thing is that--much of my monkeying comes from playing 2-3 creatures.. sac'ing lots.. the angel wouldnt ever get too big.

I betcha Delraich would have been a thrull

true.. i don't think a single thrull would survive in the same cage against a delraich. cept maybe mindstab thrull...

I'd be weary of a creature with a hand sprouting from his head..
