The participants in the event in the eastern town of Bunol, pelted each other with tons of ripe tomatoes.
The festival is held every year on the last Wednesday in August.
It's said to have begun in the 1940s when locals began throwing their lunch at each other in a square in the town.
Bunol residents who watched the messy proceedings from balconies, poured water on the crowd.

And if someone gets bashed in the head or is stabbed to death, they blend in with the people who are lying on the ground unconscious from the 5 lb. tomato hurled a bit too hard at their head.

Not really, they're a bit harder to get soggy in your soup.

Oooh... think about all that tomato sauce those people make!
