Okay, as of (checks watch) 7:39 PM, EST, George Bush was declared the winner of the state of Florida, with a margin of approx. 537 votes. The Gore camp has already contested it. I really don't care who wins anymore (note that this is the same person who's been defending Bush over the past 3 weeks), I just want this over with. Is anyone else with me on this? I just want one side to concede and do the best thing for America at this point.

Anyone else see South Park 2 weeks ago? That was a rather apt description if you ask me... ;)

I'm with you on this one. It's taking forever. Someone should just concede. How can you contest final results anyway?

Well the recount changed Bush's winnings from 1700 to 500, so it must have been working. And if it works, why not keep trying?

That makes no sense HM. With that logic, why not simply redo everything that ever happens so that it ends up in your favor? By that logic, we'd eventually have more votes for Gore than people who live in Florida.

Cat: I think HM's post was sorta tongue-in-cheek. Gore figures that the first recount got him closer, so he might as well push for another.

By the way, did anyone see Sunday's Doonesbury cartoon? With the way the election has gone, it's really funny.

Since the president isn't sworn in until late January, does it really matter if we know who's president until then?

In other words, do you want this to end because you want a president, or do you want it to end because you're sick of hearing about it?

If it doesn't matter that we know until the sworn-in date, then the former shouldn't matter. If it's the latter, then I'd have to advise tuning it out (and really, over the weekend, I didn't hear a single thing about it).

Well, if you were an investor in certain stocks, knowing who the next president was could matter a good deal. Bush and Gore may have differing strategies for dealing with business, and the stocks prices will go up or down depending on the winner of the election as a predictor of the future success or failure of the corporation.

I predict Bush's victory will stand. Gore's court case doesn't seem likely to succeed to me, since the courts will not desire to set the precedent for deciding the elections in court. Bush supporters advocate unreasonably that Gore give up. If he has the slightest chance, he won't. And moreover, Bush would do exactly the same thing he denounces if he was losing, as demonstrated when he took a case to the Supreme Court just in case the manual recounts took a surprising turn, and he lost.

It disgusts me that both parties are so absorbed in the self-interest of thier candidates. Changing the standards of reading a ballot, and attempting to interpret an unclear ballot are bad ideas. The rules were set, and all the other close elections would require a time-consuming re-examination in the same light to begin to call this race fair.

Personally, I do not support the Republicans because I dislike the conservative viewpoint. What I hope for is the switching of an elector or two, and the sending of the election to the House.

If that's the ONLY reason, then that's not sufficient for me. Except for day traders, the stocks shouldn't matter in the long run (and again, that's not good enough for me).

there's more, i'm sure, including the fact that the new president needs time to settle in to the White House, so he can begin official duties January 1st. Also, presidential staff need to know if they will be out of a job or not so they can look for a new one if necessary. And, of course, if elections like this one happen again.

Anyways. it doesn't really matter who the president is. he doesn't really do that much anyways. wow, he can veto laws. thats about it.

did anyone see the news, i believe 2 days ago. bush went on television and asked the court to stop this "nonsense" and for gore to concede. now if that doesn't sound like bush is sweating it, then this is bullsh**

Settle in the White House? Before the current president's term is over? I don't think so... I think there's still stuff scheduled (like dinners and events) up until the last minute. Plus he isn't sworn in until the 24th or so... isn't that when he takes over (this I'm shaky on, so you could be right here).

Preidential staff will almost ALWAYS turnover because the new president wants his own people in those positions. Frankly, unless they were personally told by the president-elect (or candidates) that their job is secure, they should be out looking anyways. It doesn't matter who wins.

So I still haven't heard why it's "good" to get this over with ASAP (even if it already has :))
