The Ultimate Garbage Magic Draft

I was trying to think of what our next tourney project could be. This ultimate draft we did was a GREAT idea and I'm loving my deck!! But, if we do something similar, it'll take around the same time to finish. So, why not get it started now?

NOW, I have new idea. Working off of the same principle (drafting singleton style with every card in Magic in the pool), why don't we attempt a GARBAGE draft? The idea is that you draft the worse deck you can muster and, when you play in the tournament, you play with what your opponent has drafted and vice versa.

Now, there are a couple of rules that go with this to insure that the decks can feasibly win, such as there must be a minimum amount of creatures that can deal damage and that each card drafted must be useful in some way.

We'd need to iron out the rules before we begin, but I wanna do it!!!!! I wanna do it!!!!!

Who else is interested? 8 people please! :D

You should allow the player of the deck to put in the basic land.
Also, there should be something about how many colors, as 5 color bad decks woulod be easy to build.

I agree with the colors rule AND the land rule. Also, I think that at 1/3 of your deck each should be devoted to creatures, non-creature spells, and land with a 40 card minimum. With the land, the building playing can merely put the other cards and whatever non-basic lands he has drafted and the number of other lands with be determined by the playing player.

I can still build a deck that has no way of hurting the opponent.

Yeah.... I think walls should be banned...

I also think there needs to be a list of cards that can't be drafted. To do this draft right, it'll take a good bit of work.

I'm interested...

While we wait for the "Ultimate" rules to get sorted out, we could do a Garbage draft using boosters...

Or do a Point Draft (which is an entirely new draft and I can start a thread on that if anyone's interested).

That's a nice idea.

Point Draft? Like, another Ultimate Draft? Or just a regular draft?

It'd be a regular draft, as I think it's too hard going Ultimate... at least to set up for right now...

I'm also assuming that Oversoul and Mooseman are interested. That's 4. Anyone else? Limited? turgy22? DarthFerret? Lythand? Melkor? Prince RXI? I want eight for it.

I am interested, but I want to know more about the rules.. do we vote for a sote? Or select from every existing set? What limits are there on drafting / deck construction?

We could do a 'normal' garbage draft (with six packs per person?) or use Utopia lands (lands that count as every basic land type)..

These are the people that are currently interested. I'd like one more and then we can begin piecing some rules together.

Okay, here's what I've come up with in my brainstorming.

It'll be too hard to play if we draft from one pack that contains every card, so why don't we have a Garbage Rochester draft, instead. If we get an 8th player, we'll draft a pack from 32 different expansions.

I can generate packs, but I'll recommend that a second player also generates them for the times it gets close to me picking first... unless you guys trust me enough to let me generate all of them. After all, we'll be trying to draft the worst cards, not the best.

This could be a draft than the Ultimate Draft, since the cards to pick from will be limited by the generator.

In the article that I read about the a garbage draft, here were their suggestions:

Each deck needs to be 60 cards, no larger or smaller.
Each deck must have at least 24 creatures.
Draft 4 four packs per player. This will insure the amount of creatures needed for a minimum.
The player that uses the deck first devises the mana ratio.

I'd like to add to this list of rules that the drafting player leaves 20 to 23 spots open for the first player to use for the land base. We should have a set number.

Whaddya guys think?

Works for me
Let's set the number of lands at 20, so each are the same.
Why not have each player that uses the deck, put in the land they want.
I assume we are only using basic lands......

Those work, too. Anyone else have any comments?

We'd like 1 more people to join, as well.
