Lemesee,.........where...did...I....leave...off? Oh, Yeah! The School Musical. Every year during the months of March and April I take on many responsibilities such as being the Pit Orchestra director for the musical, take my kids on trips like to Toronto (this year), and Honors Bands galore. This leaves me with no time to really participate in tourney action
, however, I do have the school Morning Magic Club going on, though
.
Well, all of the responsibilities are done with now leaving only the spring concerts and and graduation left. So, this past week I spent time doing tourney magic stuff and here's how it went:
Last Friday was "Draft Night" a weird one though, we drafted in this order, too: 1x 7th. Ed, 1x MM and 1x Invasion, go figure, I was just happy to play
. I drafted G/W with nothing worth mentioning except Squall which wrecked all of my opponents at one time or another. However, I went 0-4, BUT! In my defense, I made all of the matches go to 3 games
.
This past Tuesday was Type II at the local shop. 6 of us showed up and did a round robin.
Round 1: U/W Control vs. U/B Discard
Game 1: Not having played in a constructed tournament in over a month, I felt a little rusty. He manages to get out a Doomsday Specter (I told ya I was rusty
) and I lose
.
Game 2: I lose to, get this, land screwed, I'm packing 26 land!
0-2-0
0-1-0
Round 2: U/W Control vs. G/R LD
Game 1: My confidence is shot and Billy won his first game. So there we are, it's turn seven and I have 7 lands out and he has one, I cast a Blinding Angel and over ten turns later
.
Game 2: He gets land screwed again and says on turn eight, "If this next card isn't a land, I concede.". it's not, I win
.
2-2-0
1-1-0
Round 3: U/W Control vs. R/G Beatdown (no Fires)
Game 1: Without having to deal with Fires, it's almost an auto-win. Sadly, this was my mistake and I nearly lost because of that attitude. Here's the gist if it, he managed to put all three of my Blinding Angels in my graveyard (That's my only creature), he's got me to 7 life and I've not seen a Wrath in years. Mt frist round opponent comes up and says, "Huh, wouldn't it be funny if you topdecked a Wrath next turn and wreck him?", I ignored him and topdecked a Wrath next turn and wrecked my opponent. The next turn, I allow him to cast a Thornscape Battlemage (w/Shock Kicker), and I'm at 5. I am also with Dominate
. I Dominate his Battlemage and counter every-single thing he tried putting out, I win.
Game 2: His deck works perfectly and I can't keep up and his horde kills me.
Game 3: Nothing spectacular but I wait a long time before casting an Angel. I am waiting until his hand is low and manageable for me. 3 Wrath's later and several spent Counterspells, I cast a Blinding Angel and go for the slow win!
4-3-0
2-1-0
Round 4: U/W Control vs. G/W/R beats
Game 1:He left because he was 0-3.
4-3-0
3-1-0
Round 5: U/W Control vs. G/W Control?
Game 1: His deck was amazing! He used Orim's Chant as a Countermagic search and destroyer, he would cast it, I would counter it, he cast something else, and if I didn't have enough mana I was screwed! This was the case many times. However, I managed to sqeek out a win first game.
Game 2: What to 'sideboard' in? Millstone, of course! Well, I never saw a Millstone or much land either, his quick mana producers (BoP's, Llanowar's and Vine Trelles') were phenominal. I lose.
Game 3: I play 2 Millstones within 10 turns and am holding off the creature rush with an Angel. I am mill away tons of good stuff like Blastoderm's, Orim's Chant's, several Blinding Angels and other neat stuff. I end up with three Millstones in play and finally deck him. I win.
6-4-0
4-1-0
I win first place for $11 in store credit, whahoey! I get the 7th Ed Starter CD ROM kit and a box of sleves and go home happy
.
So I guess I'm back on the saddle again, I just wish I could go to regionals, but I can't, oh well, I never said it would be an easy trip down that long and dusty road, to Tourneyland.
