Hi All,
Before I give my report (a-hem), I want to put a post-script on the ugly incident I wrote about on the thread "Team CMU": At this tournament I saw the dude I accused of getting preferential treatment and shook hands with him and we apologized to each other for our actions (it's behind us now,
).
Okay, on with the report. Well, no news on "The Evil Shop Guru" because he wasn't there (neither was his business partner whom I used to refer to as Evil Silent Guy and will now address him as Happy Guy).
I promised to mention something about well-endowed women, but I didn't have a good view of the health spa across the street today *sigh*
.
<getting to be a pretty lame report so far, huh?>
Only six participants today, but very, very, very GOOD participants today (note: I will mention their names but not reveal as to which match I played them in, I didn't really ask to use their names so I'm thinking if I just mention they were there but not when I played them, that might be okay, I hope). In no particular orderthey were: The Magic Word's founder Nate Heiss, Doug <insert slap happy clarinet solo here>, Andrew Johnson (he recently wrote an article on responsible magic-internet writting, it's at the Mindripper, so I better be DAMN accurate on this report
), Ron Kotwica, and Billy (possible pro-tour material).
We each paid $10 to be in and the prizes were 1st. $40 and 2nd. $20. We played "Round Robin".
1st. Opp.
U/G Pie-Go v. B/W/r Arena Angel
Game 1: He never gets the mana he needs and my deck just sorta did it's thing and beat him down (I didn't take any damage and Des. Angel never went off).
Game 2: I miss countering an Arena and I think I'm dead, but alas a Rishadan Airship came to the rescue and I win (again, without taking any damage, Wah-hoey!).
2-0
1-0

2nd. Opp.
U/G Pie-Go v. U/W/r Counter-Rebels
Game 1: A first turn Sargent followed by an uncountered Goblin Legionnaire, on his second turn, tells me I'm in for an interesting game. He soon gets out more Bears than I have Skyfolk or Airships and he wins easily.
Game 2: Man, I hate to win by bad circumstances, but he got SO land screwed. By turn four he had only two land, 1x Plains and 1x Battlefield Forge. I am with Dust Bowl and wreck his land, I send in a pair of Skyfolk for the kill.
Game 3: His deck is amazing, I never though Goblin Legionnaire was good, but now, whew, it's SOME GOOD <tm>. I lose.
2-2
1-1

3rd. Opp.
U/G Pie-Go v. Classic U/W Control
Game 1: A turn three Airship proves fatal and he never recovers, I win.
Game 2: Okay, all I remember about this game is; he plays a foreign misprinted Serra Angel, it's supposed to be a Time Elemental (the time elemental picture and color of card, Blue), but it's casting cost, text and P/T are Serra's, cool. Well, it beats me down and now he has total control.
Game 3: I draw three Millstones in my opening hand and he deals with each of them no matter how much back up I think I'm packing. But he never gets out the Angel, instead, he decks me with HIS Millstone
.

U/G Pie-Go v. U/B/G Counter-Nether-Monger
Game 1: Pernicious Deed IS A KILLER! His deck had an answer to each and everthing that I did, as if it was supposed to, ZOIKS! He never even played the Spiritmonger, frickin' Nether Spirit kicked my Ars!
Game 2: I learned something today, did you know that when you are playing Wash Out and they are with Monger, you just shut your pie-hole until they respond, then say the color. WOW, I always played Wash Out naming the color a.s.a.p., nope, no more. I lost anyways
.

5th. Opp
Would've been: U/G Pie-Go v. Go-Mar, but Billy (0-3) dropped like a hot-kabob (oops, I mentioned a name, sorry
).
------------------------------------------------------------
What did I learn? I learned that if you play with good people, you begin to get better yourself. I also learned that I should've warned my friends that I invited Nate Heiss and crew to the tourney, sorry guys, a painful $10, I know
.
I also learned that I'm not really that bad of a player, and that my deck has potential. I had fun playing it. Here's what it looked like today and then I'll show the adjustments I've made to it based on today's tourney.
"U/G Pie-Go" v.7.14.01
2x Mahamoti Djinn
4x Gaea's Skyfolk
4x Rishadan Airship
4x Theiving Magpie
4x Mystic Snake
4x Counterspell
2x Thwart
2x Foil
4x Fact or Fiction
4x Tangle
3x Wash Out
4x Yavimaya Coast
2x Dust Bowl
1x Rath's Edge
5x Forest
12x Island
SB:
1x Wash Out
3x Gainsay
2x Teferi's Response
2x Misdirection
2x Juntu Stakes
4x Millstone
1x Meekstone
Based on today's outcome, this deck cannot handle Pernicious Deeds, at least I was able to hold my own somewhat with the other decks I lost to, the indicator was that I went to three games. Also, without a better card drawing engine, it's a sitting duck with a bad mana draw.
How to improve?
As I was trading today I ran across Fleeting Image, I have two already, so I got two more and pondered their worth in the new T2 environment. I think they're great, they sort of remind me Rainbow Effret's, only the Images are pay 1U to return it to your hand. As far as the card drawing thing is concerned, Opt's and A.K.'s are the way to go.
So, here's the imroved list (IMO
):
"U/G Counter-Snake"
2x Mahamoti Djinn
4x Gaea's Skyfolk
4x Fleeting Image
4x Mystic Snake
4x Counterspell
2x Thwart
2x Foil
2x Fact or Fiction
4x Accumulated Knowledge
4x Opt
3x Rushing River
4x Yavimaya Coast
2x Dust Bowl
2x Rishadan Port
4x Forest
14x Island
SB:
4x Gainsay (simply awesome)
4x Penumbra Bobcat (as suggested by mpgsheep)
1x Meekstone (another one could go here too)
2x Teferi's Response (Man, this thing was good today)
2x Misdirection
2x Wash Out
The Bobcat is brilliant, if I would've had them today, I know I would've made it a rougher time for my wrath and Deed opponents
.
This Tuesday, I am treking down to Pittsburgh to play-test at the place where Team CMU hangs out (I sorta invited myself
) I'll let you know how it goes.
Today was a good day, I leanrned alot, I think I'm getting better, AND, a little farther down that old and dusty road, to Tourneyland.
